I have up to now always been a waistband concealed carry man - either inside or outside.

But life changes and I now find myself with a much greater need for being able to draw and fire while seated - either in a vehicle or just an ordinary chair. So, what are my options for concealed carry?

Ankle holsters are out. If I'm in a vehicle drawing from one would be problematic.

I seem to be down to a shoulder holster of some type or something like a belly band holster.

I'm in the hot & sweaty southeast so clothing is something that I must always consider. I'm a button-down type of guy who must now keep his shirt tucked in.

The two firearms I'll be carrying (one at a time) are either an SP101 with 2" barrel or a Ruger EC9S.

At the moment I'm thinking leather shoulder holster worn under a button down shirt, probably bought a size larger than what I'm wearing now. A bit slower on the draw, but better concealment which is a must for some places I will be. The Galco VHS system looks good, or if I decide I really like it perhaps a Sam Andrews rig.

What do you suggest?

Too pricey for me.
I'm not a shoulder holster guy,, but realize the price of a shoulder holster basically includes the holster, belt (the shoulder rig), and mag pouch, so you need to compare apples to apples when your comparing cost to a belt holster.

An Andrews Custom Leather shoulder holster is going to cost more than the Sherrick model.

Then you remove the gun from your pocket while driving and place it somewhere that is handy - whether that is one of the specialty rigs that attach somewhere, or in the driver's door or center console, that solves that issue.

The vast majority of the time I carry IWB at around the 4 o'clock position. With that I can draw even when seated. They covered drawing while seated in a couple of the pistol classes I've taken and then I've devoted some time to a range session at least once a month to pulling my truck up there and drawing and firing from there in an effort to staying current. You have to hunt around for a range that'll let you do this though and it's helpful if you get some instruction.

For when I was pocket carrying more though I went with two different options.

The first option is that I have two pistols. One dedicated truck pistol (I also have a pump shotgun behind the back seat for hogs or in case I need it) and then I also still have my regular pocket pistol on me. I put the dedicated truck pistol (CZ-75 compact clone/Canik C-100) in the same map pouch in the drivers side door as below.

The second option is if I'm pocket carrying and seated in a vehicle my draw times are so slow that when I get in I take it out and put it in the map pocket of the door. (I've taken the stuff out that sandwiches it in so it can't move around or dump upside down or go sideways for the purpose of the picture, messy).

I can draw it with either hand from that door pocket. I have to lean over a bit to do it with my right though.

Eventually I'll probably get one of those holsters that mounts to the side of the center console.

After driving limousines for a few years in some really bad parts of town I went with a crossdraw. It solved every problem with being seated in a vehicle for long hours. You are not sitting on the gun, it's not going to snag on your seatbelt, it offers a fast draw even if your belted in and my favorite part was I could be sitting inside the vehicle with my hand on the gun and no one can see what I'm doing. No more back pain. If someone jerks my door open at a stop light I can still get the gun out in time. It does require some sort of cover garment like a jacket. I would never place a gun in a door pocket because on a rainy day it's going to get soaked and if someone jerks your door open your gun is now out of reach.

How do you get to that conclusion? If it is raining, my windows and doors are closed.....

When the door is opened and it's pouring down rain the door pocket is going to take on water. The other issue with a gun loosely stashed in a pocket or between the console and seat is that in event of a crash that gun will becoming a flying missile. I have been in a couple of bad crashes and everything in the car goes flying. IMO the gun should be firmly secured to your body. If it's not then there's a good chance that when you desperately need it - it may be just out of reach.

If I am opening the door, I have already out my gun back in my pocket. I also use an umbrella when opening the door in a rainstorm.

If it's raining hard before I get out out of the truck I straighten my legs, raise my pelvis partially out of the seat and open the right pocket with my left thumb and re-insert the pistol/holster back into my pocket with my right. It never gets wet.

Cross draw is a good system if you're continually driving. I'm not, if I'm forced to pocket carry by social constraints (businesses and establishments that don't actually have 30.06 signs, but where it would be more than a social faux pas if someone were to inadvertently flash their concealed pistol) then I'm in and out of the vehicle all day.

When I'm in and out of my truck a lot I keep my j-frame stashed in a holster that's clipped to my door pocket. Before I get out I slip the revolver in a pocket holster and into my pocket.

If you prefer to keep the gun on you, I've found appendix carry works pretty good for riding in a car. My SP101 was all-day comfortable in a AIWB holster. I've also found appendix carry is easier to access when your shirt is tucked in than any other IWB position.

I carry my EDC very similar to how Browning caries his except I use a Kydex holster secured with Velcro and it is a bit more hidden in my car door pocket.

That's probably a better solution than having your pistol being held immobile by a bunch of maps and a bag 'o trash.

I know everyone is terrified of blowing their pee pee off or putting a hole in their femoral artery whilst carelessly holstering, but AIWB can work well when seated or driving. When I know I'll be sitting in meetings most of the day or where I'll be on the road a lot, I AIWB with my P30SK and have no worries about putting holes anywhere they shouldn't be nor of removing any dangly bits from my anatomy.

The holster under-shirts from 5.11 are a deep concealment option. Draw is similar to a shoulder holster if the outer shirt is button-down and you do the velcro thing to a couple of buttons.

when I get in I take it out and put it in the map pocket of the door.

I’ve thought about keeping my gun in the door pocket. I like the idea that I can access my gun without anyone being able to see. I just worry about having it fall out in some parking lot somewhere. I’m probably just being paranoid.

I wonder if anyone makes a holster that is made for a door pocket? Hidden? Secure?
