Hi all,

In the next six months I'll be getting my concealed carry permit and I'm working aquiring gear for that purpose. I've narrowed my weapon choice down to a baby glock and I'm going to rent some of the different models this weekend, but my question is regarding a ccw holster. I work in a private medical office where I can legally carry, but I'm required to wear scrubs and I frequently run, bend over and lift heavy objects so gun retention and preventing printing are of higher concern then draw speed.

With the above criteria in mind I've been looking into a shoulder holster than I can wear OVER an under shirt, but UNDER my uniform, I've tried belly band hybrids like the "Deep Conceal holster" but the velcro retention strap is tough to get off quickly. I much prefer the thumb snap system like the ones employed on the galco rigs but these seem bulky and I'm not sure if they will stay in place during my daily activities. I was wondering of any of you has experience using these bilateral under a thick shirt and if you think they'd fit the bill or if anyone is familiar with a lower profile rig like the deep conceal holsters that has a quick release. Thanks in advance for any advice

Oh and I should mention I'm a big guy at 6 feet and around 270 pouds and when I tried the deep conceal holster I was in my uniform with my full size glock 22 so I know it can work, I'm just looking for the right rig

Check out the belly band offered by Andy Arratoonian at Horseshoe Leather. Excellent quality and design. No retention strap needed, as it uses an actual molded leather holster as part of the system.
he's as close as your mailbox. I'd put an order in now and you should have it before you get your CCW.

Thanks for the responses, I looked at both of those I really want some sort of retention strap, and I don't want an iwb holster just cause I'm afraid of the possiblility of the gun showing while I'm carrying something

Thanks fatcat that was helpful, I hadn't done a Google search...

Ferretray, After reading reviews I think I might get some suspenders and give the fusionpac a try

I'm not that familiar with scrubs, but aren't they typically a pull over top with no buttons and not made of a stretchy fabric like a jersey knit? If so, I think you would have quite a bit of trouble accessing a shoulder holster under such a shirt. Additionally, I'd think a guy of your dimensions may not have the range of motion that 6', 175 lb. guy may have.

I think the general consensus is an IWB holster is the most concealable way to carry. Appendix carry may be a good way to go.

I think kydex is a good way to go for a Glock and especially for a medical environment where you may get germ and bacteria "stuff" on your holster. Kydex is rigid and will protect the Glock trigger and it will be easy to clean the various germs off.

Do a forum search for member tmoore912.

He has some excellent pictures of various holsters in their "wear" position. These pictures should give you some good ideas.

try smartcarry.com. I'm in the healthcare field also, I dont have my permit yet but will next month. Anyways, my co-worker has his and uses the smartcarry under his scrubs. He says its so comfortable he forgets he has it on. You might as well check them out.

Well, if I was able to wear scrubs to work i'd just wear some sort of small fanny pack. I think it could kinda blend with the uniform, if you pick the right pack. Stick a few medical doo-dads in the exterior pockets and it could look like you just use it to carry frequently used items. One of my employees is a field technician and he has a tiny tool pouch on his belt with essential items he needs to diagnose equipment before going out and getting his main tool boxes. The small pockets in front carry his leatherman knife, pen, cell phone, and pen-light. The larger pocket in back holds his gun. Everyone can see all the gadgets in front but the gun is completely invisible.

I work in EMS but know some nurses and quite a few doctors that carry in scrubs. Mostly they use smart carry with a snubbie revolver. but I know one doc, who is 6'2" 215lbs and carrys a G26 in a shoulder holster under his scrubs, and it works well for him.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll expound a little on what I do, I'm a veterinary technician, my daily duties include restraining large, angry dogs, which means I frequently end up in strange positions (kneeling down, laying on the floor, or leaning over a table.)

My main concern with the traditional IWB holster is that it will print when I'm kneeling down, or that I'll be in a position that causes my shirt to ride up and if I'm holding and angry animal that's trying to bite someone, I can't always stop to pull my shirt down. not to mention it would be a great leverage point for a dogs paw when its trying to get away. I've been toying with the idea of sewing belt loops on to my pants then finding some thick, black, extra long undershirts to prevent the issue of riding up and printing, but the holster would need to be "very tuckable".

I like the smart carry holster, I'm just not sure if the gun would stay put all the time which is a concern when carrying a Glock, do you all who have used it find that it retains the gun well? Keep in mind, I'm not wearing jeans and belt, its a light fabric with no belt. And regarding the fusionpac, have any of you worn it below the waist band of you pants?

Thanks again for all the suggestions they've all given me different ideas of things to try, this a great community.

PS, I hope I haven't made it sound like your dog is tortured at the vet when your not with it, its just rottweilers aren't always too civil about getting their temperatures taken :p

About the fusionpac, they don't make one for my Kahr, I have just seen them posted elsewhere and thought it seemed like a solution to your problem. Sounds like you've got a tough CCW puzzle.

Are you permitted to carry at work? If so, the dogs won't care if you print. That being said, remember that scrubs don't have belts, so shoulder or Fanny pack would work better. I kind of like the Fanny pack idea.

I ankle carry my G26. A galco ankle glove works great. I really forget it's there after a little bit. I even have a extension on the mag so I carry 13 rounds. Weight isn't really an issue with a good holster.
I'm a plumber so i'm always working in strange positions. Nothing will work for what I do like the ankle holster. I wear high boots so I don't need the calf strap, although I think I may get one for when I wear tennis shoes. I think it would help keep it where I want it better.
It will never print and if your scrubs are long enough it will never show when kneeling.

Ya, I'm leaning towards the fusionpac, my pants are baggy so that'll help. I think I'm gonna go with the glock 30 which IMHO is to big for ankle carry. And ya I don't dogs will care about printing, there's no policy ( for or against cc'ing) but I don't wanna give my liberal co workers a heart attack.
