My local guy had a few in. This one was $200. It's from 1979. Seemed tight and checked out, but filthy and had some rust. Mostly on right side. I took a chance and took it home. I've popped the sideplate on every used Smith I ever owned but never went further than that. I did watch a guy totally break one down a few years ago and helped a bit, but never really did it myself. I watched a bunch of Youtube videos and got pretty comfortable and got to work. Total strip and dunked everything into automatic transmission fluid for a week. This is what I now have for $217 out the door. The stocks have a matching serial number to the gun, but magna stocks never fit me right, even with Tyler T grips. It's wearing Uncle Mike's rubber finger groove now. Pretty happy with it.

For $217 OTD, you've done good; really good! Let us know how things go at the range.

He had one other Model 10 for $275 but it had been refinished. I already have a refinished Model 10 so I wasn’t interested. I was specifically looking for a gun I could shoot and holster and not worry about.

Most of the rust was surface only and came right off in the ATF bath. You can see the marks on the sideplate as being pretty much the only issues left, other than the very little loss of blue at the tip of the barrel. This was a court officer’s gun, and they’re not pulling their guns very often, if ever.

I stopped in today with the gun. The owner and I are friendly, but not friends. Wanted to show him what it came out to be. His eyes narrowed a bit. He said “guess you got a really good deal, then”. I’m sure he won’t be pricing them at $200 anymore.

OP,

I just want you to know that I appreciate you adopting that poor tired and neglected Model 10.

She looks much healthier now that she is in your care.

We need more gun owners like you.

So thanks, from all of us gun owners.

Nice score!

My guy at the LGS sets aside basket cases specifically for me, lol! So far he's given me great deals on a Colt New Army ($250, needed a hand, cylinder stop and springs), a Walther Model 4 ($100, needed springs and the trigger bar straightened), a M28 Highway Patrolman ($300, excessive endshake, needed shims and a new hand), a Trooper Mk3 ($300, cracked trigger), and a K98 ($100, cracked stock, missing trigger assembly).

I'm not great at refinishing, but if its got mechanical issues, I can usually fix it. :)
