I did some looking today during lunch break at the local gun shop and found a guy trying to sell his S&W model 10-8 to the shop. The owner said he wasn't interested as most people want autos these days. The owner was pretty damn rude to the guy about it. I saw the guy walking out so I followed him out and asked what he was looking to get for the revolver. He said $200. I told him to come over to my car where I pulled out a bill of sale and two bills. Less than 5 minutes later he got his cash and I got my revolver. I cleand it up a bit tonight and it looks nice and action is tight. I'll be ordering a Pachmayr compact pro grip tomorrow along with couple speed loaders. I think I did good.

Can anybody tell me when 10-8 series were produced? Also, who make a good concealment OWB holster for this revolver?

The 10-7 (tapered bbl) & 10-8 (heavy bbl) were introduced in 1977, and phased out some time in 1988 when the 10-9 and 10-10 replaced them. If you'll check the serial number on the butt under the grips and post it - replace the last two digits with XX - we can get you a closer estimate on year of production.

In an OWB holster I've found the DeSantis Speed Scabbard to be well liked by customers & my coworkers.

I just noticed that your particular gun is 3" bbl model. 3" Heavy bbl K-Frames are very highly sought after as carry revolvers. $200 is an excellent price for a 3" gun in that condition.

As someone who works in a gun shop I also applaud your etiquette of waiting until both the previous owner & the gun shop owner had finished their business and then conducting your private transaction outside his shop. While I'm disheartened that the shop owner was rude to a patron I'm glad to hear that you did the right thing.

Congratulations to that beautiful gun! Quite a bargain! The Uncle Mike's grips are discontinued but I find them very comfortable to shoot.

Looks like I finally got a good deal :)

BTW. where can I look up S&W serial numbers to get production dates? I have couple others that I would like to look up without bothering people here every two minutes

Many of us have the Standard Catalog of S&W by Supica and Nahas and it is there in the appendicies.
Feel free to post the other SNs and one of us will gladly provide the manu dates or you could call S&W 1800 331 0852 they will give you the same basic date as the book.

Parts kits are probably the guts pulled off of demilled used revolvers.

Your 10-7 with AYH Serial No. looks to be made in the first half of 1988, making it one of the last before the 10-9 replaced it later that year. I have a 4" 10-8 with AYL Serial No. which is also a 1988 gun made before the 10-10 replaced it the same year.

Also, what's the story with the Parts Kits? Are they S&W OEM parts?

I got one of those, the metal parts were in great shape with over 95% blueing left but the grips were unuseable, they were shot.
Still $99 is not too bad a deal to fill up the parts box all at once.

Thanks guys, thought it was older for some reason.

On a side note I made out like a bandit at the gunshow today. A vender had a load of stuff from an estate sale where it looked like somebody had bought this stuff to go all out on an S&W K .38........and then croaked. All of it was NIB! Speedloaders, Pacifica (Hornaday) dies with the factory grease coating still on them and instructions, 100 ct. new brass, Pachy grips NIB never installed (very 70's looking boxes)! Stole it all. :)
I bought a gun and got completely set up on it in three days, something that has taken me years with other firearms.

Oh yeah, a guy told me today that the airforce had a load of .38's and destroyed the frames for whatever reason but not the guts.

He might have referring to the S&W Model 56. The great majority were supposedly destroyed, but a scarce few survived. Big $$$. If you happend to see one, snap that puppy up!
