Looks like my state of Kentucky is about to adopt CC, and that's great, but I have a question for anyone who knows the answer or lived in a CC state. How does this apply to reciprocity with other states? Can you still keep your CCW permit, do the keep issuing them for this purpose, or how does this work? I know KY for example recognizes Arizona's permit, and their a CC state, so does AZ still offers permits to accomodate this?

The state should provide the option of a permit for the purposes of reciprocity. However, the adoption of CC may alter the extent of reciprocity with some states.

Some states require certain training standards to be met, and honor the licenses/permits of other states with similar requirements. When some of those "also-honored" states drop their requirements to go "CC", they no longer meet the standards set by the original state in question, so they get dropped from reciprocity. New Mexico, for example, did this to us here in Florida when we decided to allow under-21 military personnel/veterans to be so licensed (New Mexico has since re-instated reciprocity.)

Almost every state that has gone "CC" in recent years has continued to offer an optional license/permit for those wishing to have one. The state of Vermont, however, never required nor issued one, so there isn't one available. An option for those in states that do not issue one, who wish to have one for other-state reciprocity, would be to obtain on in a different state that issues permits to non-residents (my home state of Florida comes to mind.)

A good source of information on this is at www.handgunlaw.us.

In Idaho we have what I call limited CC, as it only applies to residents of the state. The state still issues standard and enhanced permits for reciprocity and to expand the places you are allowed to carry.

Every state will have their own laws regarding reciprocity and CC. Here in Maine, CC applies to residents and non-residents alike (unless otherwise prohibited). One of the advantages to retaining a permit is for carrying in states that do not have CC, but recognize your state permit. There are other advantages to having a permit here such as carrying in a school zone or in state parks where CC is not permitted. In theory this prohibition applies to driving on a public road within 1000 feet of school property.

AK had an optional CCW license with training requirements that allowed reciprocity with other states when I lived there.

I live in a Constitutional Carry state. For exactly the reason for the OPs post I keep my CCW permit active. I just renewed it last summer. It's just too much to worry about when I travel. I will not travel in Ill, NY, NJ, CA or any other state that does not recognize my CCW permit.

No matter what your state does, or even if national reciprocity were to ever happen you should keep a CCW for your state and keep very aware of reciprocity with other states and yours.

All will be well. Heard a state rep answer the question. KY will still issue permits to keep reciprocity with current states that recognize.

That 'fact" is incorrect.

Then you should inform the DA in Medina Ohio who chose on his own to disregard your CCW laws when I was carjacked in 2009. It amazes me how many people take offense to what their own elected officials do. I guess it’s okay as long as it doesn’t affect them, until someone calls them out for it on a national website.

The law has been changed since then
Your attorney didn't do his homework if that is the case.

Agreed, I had three CCWs seized and returned to my home jurisdiction for review. I got out of there as quickly as work would allow.
I’m now a Florida resident and it would take a nuke to get me back above the 15th parallel.
