I've got my eye on another Colt 1860 Army, from 1862. Overall pretty nice---but--- the grips are very poor replacements that don't fit right at all, showing 1/18 of the backstrap here, about the same of the trigger guard there. Are there any replacements that will fit this that are, at worst, oversized all the way around so the can be shaped to fit or can fit as is? I have an 1860 from 1863 plus an Uberti replica and the Uberti grips won't fit nor can be modified to fit. Thanks for your help guys. John

There's a set of original Colt 1860 grips for sale on eBay:--->>> https://www.ebay.com/itm/Colt-Army-...116113?hash=item41fad4acd1:g:aooAAOSw8VNcZxeg

If the link doesn't work type only the auction number into the eBay search box:--->>> eBay item number: 283381116113

Or try: Colt Army Model 1860, Original Parts - Wood Grips - TT5

The same seller also has an original 1860 cylinder for sale which could be a good indication that the grips are authentic.

It occurs to me that there may be custom grip makers that can build a set of grips.
They usually need to have the pattern if not the gun itself.
Someone must be able to make original Colt 1860 grips but finding out who would require some investigating with people in the know.
There's always a greater risk sending an antique gun to a private individual grip maker who doesn't have the sterling reputation that an established company has.

Another option is if you have a 2nd set of grips, to build up one set using wood paste, epoxy or filler products.
Some are better than others.
The old Hammerli Grip Paste was a well known 2 part wood epoxy.
I read that it was replaced by Morini Grip Paste which is basically just like brown colored Bondo, only a lot more expensive.
There are other products to build up a grip, but the results can vary.
Some are as hard as JB Weld and a different color than wood.
But a person [especially target pistol shooters] does what they need to do to make the grip fit & function satisfactory.

Someone did post that "eagle grips makes beautiful grips for C&B revolvers.
It's more expensive, and you may have to send them the gun, but they do beautiful work.

If you're somewhat handy with a jig saw, rasp and sandpaper, you can build a nice pair of grips from a piece of black walnut or marine-grade mahogany. I did that on my .36 Navy replica.
