Need a bullet puller. Not the collet type. I have tried that route. Need for 9mm and 45acp SWC.

Different collet methods (like shell holders) and advice for these appreciated.

I have had the same green hammer for ~25 yrs. I’d assume it’s an RCBS, but would have to look at it to be sure. Works fine. Don’t think any of them are really any better or worse than the others.

Like Varminterror mines a green hammer too!

Shhhhh- Don’t tell anybody, but even I have to pull one every now and then!

I used an old RCBS hammer type bullet puller that a buddy loaned and it worked well. During my search for a hammer type puller, I noticed many were on the market and the biggest difference seemed to be their color (green, blue, red, orange, etc) I decided on the orange (Lyman) one. Why the Lyman version? Well, I really liked the soft, hard molded rubber handle. The others just had a hard handle with no rubber grip. It not only fit my hand, but when playing "whack-a-mole" the handle felt better in my old hands. I am pleased with my choice.

Mine's green also, it is a Quinetics Corp brand like this one:

It's a good puller, can take a lot of abuse.
Quinetics is the way to go.
I'll second, or third, the Quinetics. Mine is clear color. I have used it a lot when plunk testing different bullets at different COLs and when setting seating dies. It has taken a lot of abuse. It came with a "universal" insert to hold different calibers. I use mine for 9mm and 45 ACP.

A collet won't pull a lead SWC.
Leaving only the hammer type.
As Eugen says, a lot of them look the same except for color. I wonder if they don't come out of the same shop.

Looked at mine this morning, it’s an older version RCBS. No label on it, but looks almost the same as the new version.

I break down ammo relatively often, had to do a bunch of “left overs” when I changed barrels on my 6 creed this winter - my new throat was a lot shorter than my burnt out barrel before it.

There are some applications where a collet puller won’t work, and some applications where inertial hammers don’t work. Both are cheap enough to have both in the drawer.

Green here too. Mines a Cabelas brand. I should have gotten a RCBS in case it ever breaks, but so far so good.

I use the shell holder instead of the supplied collet, because its easier.

I've used the same RCBS for years. I had to change the O-ring that holds the insert together because it dry rotted but it's been used....a lot more than I'd like to admit.

:confused::confused:
Don't understand what you want?

You say "Not the collet type"

and then say

"Different collet methods (like shell holders) and advice for these appreciated".

So do you want a hammer or a press operated type??

If you want a Kinetic type hammer they all work the same. I have the RCBS

I got the deluxe blue model, I think it is Frankfort Arsonel.
It does not work for short pistol cartridges, but for rifle rounds I use my RCBS Jr press and a set of side cutter pliers.

I've got a couple of hammers (one green one and one blue one). I bought the second because I thought the little collars in my first one were defective or poorly designed. After I bought the second and realized that it came with virtually-identical collars, I re-read the instructions and realized I was using them upside down!

In any event, there is not the slightest bit of difference between the 2 in use. None. These are fungible products. All of them will work. None of them will do the work for you. Buy whichever is sold by a vendor you're buying something else from so you don't make a separate trip or pay for separate shipping.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! I'm not laughing at you - I'm laughing with you.:D Murphy nails me every once in a while too.

I have this for larger jobs: https://grip-n-pull.com/ It works pretty well but you need a single stage press to do it.

My inertial puller is blue and says Frankford Arsenal on it, looking like everyone elses. I use it for the ones every now-n-then.

The best puller I have seen is a revolver in the caliber that needs to be pulled, particularly for lots of pulling. ;-)

The Quinetics uni-chuck shim-fit works much better than the collar/collet that came with my my RCBS quicker less hits

A hammer inertia bullet puller here as well. I think mine is an RCBS one. It is green. It is old, maybe 35+ years old.

I found it works best if I hit against something hard. Currently, I use an old farrier's anvil but a steel plate works as well. The thicker the better.

Concrete is hard enough, but it tends to chip, damaging the surface finish.

Wood is too soft. Too much of the energy is wasted deforming the wood with each whack.

I've never tried a collet bullet puller so I cannot comment.

I use both type depending on what is needed. The inertia puller will work with most any bullet shape. I use the collets and shell holder depending on the needed. Mine is the old RCBS one with the Al shaft, 40+ yrs old. The key to this type of puller is to let the head rebound unrestricted. This requires a loose grip for it to work properly and a lot of wrist action vs arm swing. A solid surface to hit is required.

I use and like the RCBS hammer type, but I put some paper towel in the bottom as to not deform pointed soft tip bullets, very seldom need it though . A couple raps on my Rock Chucker and they come right out. hdbiker
