I finally got to try my "new to me" trap load. 1 oz of shot with Red Dot and I absolutely love it!
I decided to try a lighter load last fall when I shot about 50 of my regular 1 1/8th oz loads and I was quite sore afterwards.

I started out shooting the 1 oz loads and I was dusting the clays! I then tried my old loads for comparison and to me the difference in recoil was substantial!
For anyone shooting a lot of clays with 1 1/8th loads, I would highly recommend trying the 1 oz.
I also think the higher velocity of the 1 oz loads may have helped me hit better. Alliant manual lists my old load at 1200fps and my new load at 1300fps.

A lot of people who shoot more than a few rounds of clays a week migrate to 1oz loads sooner or later.

Looks like you just made the connection.:D

It has been while since I reloaded shot shell and played trap but 1 oz is what I loaded and some folks were going to 7/8 oz loads

One ounce loads work very nicely as you have discovered. If you load your own, the lighter load makes the bag of shot go further.
International Trap calls for 7/8ths oz (24 grams)

I agree. Been shooting 1oz for years. And it patterns better overall for me being you now have more of the wad to take up room and cushion the shot IMO. Obviously this all depends on what wads and hulls you use and the size of the loading column. Plus if your not worried about excessively long shots and loosing energy 1oz of #8 shot has more pellets in it then 1 1/8oz of 7 1/2 shot anyway.

Red Dot and Int'l Clays with 1oz of #8 is my old faithful loads. Need more energy I just put in 7 1/2 shot. I switched to Intl Clays when the "old" Red Dot was so dirty when used in Auto Loaders. But the new stuff is really good and pretty clean. But Intl Clays makes you wonder if you even shot your gun after a round of clays and looking down the barrel. So I go back and forth between those powders depending on powder availability.

Finally got my hunting partner sold on 1oz loads. He always had that mentality that 1 1/8 has more BB's so it better for hunting. One year he didn't have shells for dove season so he used my shells with 1oz of #8. I told him up front they were 1oz. He was dropping everything that flew by him that day. Now he uses my load data ever since.

As Pete D mentioned about international trap and 7/8oz.... I've always been interested in taking the next step to 7/8oz. But just haven't found the time to experiment with that setup yet.

I also switched to 1 oz loads when magnum shot crossed the $35 per bag mark, and haven't looked back. I use a variety of loads, depending on what powders and cases are available to me at the time. Used to be in the top 3 at my club with 1 1/8 oz loads, still am with 1 oz. My average hasn't changed a bit.

If you want to really reduce recoil, try 7/8 or even 3/4.

My 3/4oz reload running at 1275 through a slightly tighter choke SMOKES targets, AND I get 533 reloads from a bag of shot.

I'm glad to read so many have had the same experience as me with the 1 oz loads. I'll never go back to the 1 1/8th load that I have literally shot thousands of over the last 40 years!
Thanks for your comments!
