My whole family missed out on big game tags this year. We just didn't win any draws. I'm thinking about harvesting a few quail when that season opens. I've got to put my license to some use, and hopefully their's. We live rural and there's quail on public land just a 15 minute drive from home.
I don't want to buy myself a shotgun that my boys can't use for the next several years. It may be a bit early for them to shoot even a youth shotgun. It will be four or five years before they'll fit a full-size gun. One of them is about 4'7" and 66 pounds with a 12" LoP. They might fit a 12.5". Even if a youth 20 ga is too much for them this season, they'll certainly be ready for it next year.
I understand the merits of other types of shotguns, but I'm attracted to gas-operated semi-automatics because the action slows the recoil velocity without a lot of gun weight.
So I'm looking at:
11-87 Compact
SA-20 Youth/Bantam
CZ 720 reduced length
Weatherby SA-08
Berretta A400 Lite Compact
The 11-87 is at the top of my list because it's US made and I believe it adapts best to smaller shooters. But I don't really know much about this segment of the market. Any advice?
