Have a GP100 in 4in SS I bought new back in 98. Love to carry, shoot and reload for it. I have been stepping out on it though :)
I bought a brand new Security Six 4in blued a few months back. Estate Sale deal. It was manf in 79. I love this piece. Shoots so accurate, carries really well. Trigger is actually smooth.
A true love affair. I really like the look of it in blued. I don't plan on divorcing my GP, just a little attention to a new attraction. The Six series are so cool. My Speed Six in 2 3/4 is my everyday ccw.

I used to have both a GP100 and a Security Six, the GP was turned into something else through a trade. Still have the Six. The GP’s are great but just liked the Six more. The trigger on mine is fantastic, I bought it used so no idea if it’s had a trigger job or just smooth through use, but I have no need to have anything further done to the trigger.

Use to have many Rugers of the Six series of revolvers. Over time I foolishly sold or traded all of them away. Had one GP100 and although it was supposed to be an improvement over the Security Six I just didn't care for it.

Would love to find a LNIB Security Six!

The only thing bad that I can think of about the RUGER Six series is that they are no longer being made. I wish RUGER would bring back the stainless Security Six with a 4.2 inch barrel.

So are the Security 6 a touch more accurate than GP 100?
Better trigger?
Are they as Durable?
I'd be interested in one I could hunt with
What Barrel length s did they come in?
4.2 stainless sounds poyfect!

2 3/4, 4 and 6 inch barrels. Slightly smaller than the GP, very close in size to a K frame Smith, while the GP is more L frame size. As far as trigger I’m sure that’s on an individual basis whether it’s better than a GP. They are durable but the one downside is Ruger no longer services them if something goes wrong.

Security Six has the better trigger
My GP is a tad more accurate. Not really a dimes difference though.
Both are as durable as you will ever need. They will pass from family member to family member
6in barrel would be tops for hunting
Both guns are keepers.

Meh...
I’ve been solidly in the S&W camp. Always will be.

I bought a Police trade-in S/S Sec-6 4” from Matthews Police Supply at the 2000 NPSC off a table they had set up for $125. Not much love for them back then!

I repaired a loose front sight, and gave it a trigger job resulting in a decent trigger. Polished it to approximately factory original finish. I carried it while hunting for several years, even killed a pig that wandered up on me.

Several years ago, I sold it on consignment for $450!

They are solid, serviceable guns, but like Glocks, they aren’t perfect. I replaced the Sec-6 with a S&W M19. It too, was run hard and put up wet! It now looks like a prom queen. Shoots twice as accurate as the S-6! My heirs will inherit it.

The Security Six was my first .357 which I bought new in 1982. There is something about the muzzle heavy heft of the GP (as well as the S&W 686) that just doesn't feel right to me. The SS feels perfectly balanced in the hand and my 6" barrel version provides excellent ballistics for slow burning powders such as H110 or W296. I have a load using W296 and a Remington 125 grain JHP that clocks over 1650 fps.

If you ever stumble across a Security Six and the condition and price is right, you can't go wrong snagging it.

Nothing wrong with either revolver. Both the Security-six and the GP100 are over-engineered in typical Ruger fashion. Supposedly the GP100 was rolled out as a revolver intended to take a sustained use of hot loads. Like the Security-six couldn’t? Most folks that own either revolver tend to shoot limited quantities of hot loads anyway. In this context the GP100 may have been the answer to a question that no one ever asked. But then Ruger never was a company to rest on its laurels. I have several of each and marvel at the simplicity and strength of their design. Typically install Wolff spring kit to achieve a better trigger pull. Occasionally will do a little judicious stoning to slick one up. Both models are accurate. I honestly don’t think you could wear either one out. What more could we ask? My 4” GP 100 or one of my 4” RedHawks are my carry gun when I deer hunt.

It is not cheating. Revolvers are social animals, and like companions. ;)

The GP100 and the DA Sixes can have smooth or rough triggers. Best to buy them in person, at a local FFL or gun show.

I think my GP100, and Speed and Security Sixes, will outlast me, being something my now-toddler grandsons may well use for years.

It is still possible to buy pre-owned parts on evil-bay, most probably coming from buy-back program guns that have been parted-out.

As I understand, Bill Ruger told Mas Ayoob that the Security/Speed/Service Sixes were too expensive to manufacture, at a price buyers wanted to pay. The GP100 was an economy-of-manufacture decision. This is what I read, as written by Mas, in more than one article/book.
