So about 2 weeks ago I bought a brand new Ruger American in 30-06. I was mounting my Vortex scope on it and realized that the trigger guard was cracked. Immediately called Ruger, gave them my serial number and they sent me out a replacement stock but when I went to put it all back together I realized that the magazine well is much larger than the original stock and my mag just falls out, pics included. I call Ruger back the next morning and the lady told me that they had changed the style of the stock and they would send me the needed mag insert. It's supposed to be coming 2nd day air so should be here tomorrow. Have you guys any idea of the stock change? I can't find anything on the Google machine that mentions it.

Someone should know I believe there on the 3rd generation, each one has some small changes. Also welcome to THR.

What did you do with the old stock? How much you want for it.

I still have the old stock, don't think I will get rid of it until the problem is solved. When I'm all set with the replacement I'll sell it to you for $30 if that sounds good.

When I got my RA in 22-250, I decided that the factory plastic was easy to bend. I restocked with a Boyd stock. Then o had to Jack around with some spacers top make these magazines work correctly.

For me, the moral is that RA magazines are an issue and you just have to deal with them

The molded in trigger guard was one of the things that nudged me towards the rifle I ended up getting instead (a Weatherby Vanguard). I just didn't like the fact that if I cracked it, I'd need a new stock; especially with the lack of aftermarket currently for the AR Mag Predator which is what I was looking at. Glad Ruger was/is taking care of you, they do have a pretty good reputation for taking care of their customers.

Ruger uses several types of magazines in the American series. Some use the rotary magazines, some AR magazines, some Ruger Mini-30 magazines, and some use Accuracy International magazines. They used to have to make several different stocks to match the magazine. In order to simplify things they all now use the same stock, with different inserts in the stock to match the magazine.

As did another poster, I replaced the factory RA stock with a Boyd's. Also had to play with washers to get the magazine to operate properly.

The factory RA stock is a blight on what is otherwise a decent, cheap, and accurate rifle.
