Hi guys, I have a Speer #12 load manual and for 10mm 180 gr. Gold dot bullets it lists AA#7 powder start at 11.0 gr at 1065 fps, 12.0 gr. max at 1180fps. So I loaded up a batch starting with 11.0 -12.0 in 0.2 increments using 180 gr XTP bullets as only change from recipe. I shot 3 of the 11.0 gr. rounds over chrono and got 1266,1275 and 1260. I stopped because my starting powder charge was about 80 fps faster than the books max charge. The test gun they used was a S&W 1006 with a 5" barrel, I was using a S&W 610 revolver with a 3.875" barrel which I think should have been a little under their chrono numbers. If anyone has a different load manual please give me some info. I want to use the AA#7, it meters well, but I will also take any 800-x data as I have it also. Thanks for any help. I don't want to blow up my 610, or take a few fingers off either.

My S&W 610 is a 6", and it always gives considerably higher velocities than my pistols, even the Delta Elite with it's 5" barrel.

Another thing to consider is in the S&W 1006 they used to develop the load, they measure the barrel length from the recoil plate on the slide, whereas the revolver is measured from the forcing cone. If you measure the revolver from the recoil plate to the muzzle, the barrel lengths are going to be similar. Of course there's the cylinder gap, but I haven't found that it makes that much difference in my testing.

I've got over half a dozen 10mm handguns, and they all produce different velocities with the same loads. Other than for my Springfield XDm in 10mm, I generally load for accuracy. In the XDm, I load for effect.

Hope this helps.

Speer data for 10mm has often been very hot, with start charges above max in some other books. Older Speer manuals are often even hotter.

This is a good reason to have, and check, multiple manuals.

Per AA's own online data (which Rule3 helpfully provided a link to), it appears you are over max.

Good for you, OP, for noticing the chrono readings and pausing.

Also, for maxing out 180-and-heavier 10mm bullets, I think AA#9 is even better than #7 while metering just as well.

If you're using a Hornady bullet use Hornady data. Speer data is for Speer bullets.

The Gold Dot is a plated bullet the XTP is a jacketed bullet.

IMHO you need some adult supervision at the loading bench.

I don’t really like to give out load data but I have found Blue Dot to work well with any 180g bullet I’ve tried.

Hornady data for the 180 gr XTP ranges from 9.3 to 12 gr AA7 COL is 1.260

Speer 12 data for the 180 gr GD is 11.0 to 12.0 gr aa #7 OAL is 1.250

Accurate powder data for 180 gr XTP is 180HDYXTP 9.6 gr to 10.7 OAL 1.250

Moral of the story is stay around 10 gr and all will be well.
