I’ve been shopping for a used inexpensive 9mm “range” pistol. I found a Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 at my LGS. The gun store owner and I were not familiar with this model at all. It is in fine condition and appears to have not been fired often. It came with two mags. One mag looks new and the other looks used. I did some research and this model sure does have an interesting history. My dilemma is do I use this as a range gun and shoot the hell out of it or is it worth preserving as a collectible? Thoughts? 20191020_103018.jpg

I shoot the snot out of my nickel M39......

Just a gentle wipedown with a microfiber cloth and a squirt of silicone and it still looks like new.

The blued M39 has an anodized frame, this finish can chip easily, so some care should be taken, but they are very reliable and fun pistols. I dont see them ever becoming $1000 collector guns, so I say enjoy it.

If your hope is to make money with the cash you have in that gun, just re-sell it and invest that money in an index fund or other conventional investment vehicle. You'll do a heck of a lot better when you sell.

In other words, either shoot it or sell it. Makes zero sense to keep it as a "collector."

I would say shoot it too! It's a fine choice for a range gun and is not going to appreciate in value all that much for as long as you own it. Enjoy it!

I've got a bunch of third gen S&W's. This is a first Gen, relatively large numbers were produced, so rarity is never going to happen to increase value. They are a joy to hold, for fit and finish, and craftsmanship, and solid, predictable shooters that will feed beer cans if you can stuff them into the magazine.

Shoot it, and enjoy it for what it is.

I have one. They are very good shooting guns. Mine is as accurate as a target pistol. They aren't worth a whole lot of money. Not really collectible. Shoot it to your hearts content.

Thanks for all the replies. This is good news as I do want to shoot it frequently. I just didn't want to shoot the hell out of something special and regret it when I found out.

Best to everyone,

jjj
