After spending a year in Knoxville, TN and not having had time to do anything gun-related, my wife and I finally made NC (near Charlotte) our permanent home. Feral hogs are apparently a big pest around here, so I'm looking at my options.

Initially I wanted a .308 Win semi-auto for plenty of backup firepower, however after looking at my options (potentially finnicky AR-10s, questionable QC/accuracy of affordable M1A's) I'm at a bit of a loss. Still considering an AR-10, specifically the DPMS GII Recon with 16" barrel, but now I'm wondering if I should just stick to the AR-15 platform and build a lighter weight, shorter barreled 6.5 Grendel to go with my other Grendel. It would certainly be a cheaper option, especially if I build my own, but there's still that nagging voice in the back of my head saying I need another .308 Win. ;)

I've heard conflicting reports on the DPMS GII reliability, but they were all from a few years ago. I'm hoping someone here will tell me they've sorted those out and now the rifles are GTG. Any suggestions are welcome!

308, 165g sp can be got for 150/500. Mainly up to how much range you want. 7.62 x 39, IMO, pushing it at 200 yards. 308 will carry on out 400 easy and then some.

I thought an AR10 type rifle would be perfect for pigs. The thing is a heavy brick that when is finally deployed, works splendidly....but why bother with carrying it. I say stick to AR15. 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC or my favorite, .450 Bushmaster.

I’d advise talking to the boots already on the ground in your area, consider your terrain, and get a feel for need vs want (and it’s ok to want without justifying it with need).

I’m learning with my latest AR that reasonably light does not have to cost a fortune and I’m easily shaving a pound and a half over the heavier ones.

AK and 154 grain tula soft points. A hog and deer eradication machine. And tula is $5 or so per box. If you just want cheap, SKS and same ammo. If you want expensive, and awesome, FAL. I can't imagine to many shots beyond 200-300 yards in NC. I'm in Central Texas and just took my longest deer shot in decades at about 65 or 70 yards. The x39 will deliver big time at those ranges using AK, AR or SKS.

I have no experience with the dpms GII other than holding one in the store, but that looks like an awsome platform to me. They are pretty much identical in size and weight to an AR15.

Aero precision m5 over the dpms. Do you have a budget? Do you want anything in particular just to have?

wild hogs are not armored and they are not pack hunting monsters, I’ve killed over 100 and have not had one charge me, I had one square up once at 5yds as it rounded a log and we looked at each other, a 30-30 bullet ended the standoff

if you trap em, or chase em with dogs they are like many animals, when they can’t run away anymore then they might fight,

if you want a 308 AR then get one, I’d avoid support someone like aero over DPMS but that’s me, I would try to keep overall weight to about 8.5lbs or less

if you just want a light and handy semi auto that will kill hogs, a 18” grendel with a lightweight barrel would rock. I’d go 6.8spc or Grendel before 300blk, and if thinking 300blk I’d just go 556 and shoot Barnes tsx bullets

I spend some time on Predator Masters. It seems the 6.5 is a great rifle for poking holes in paper but if you want to kill tough animals you need a 6.8 SPC. It's my next project.

I ended up picking up a Savage MSR 10 Hunter in .308. I'm impressed with it so far, but the proof will be in the pudding. I've got a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24mm on the way for this gun and should be able to get out on New Years to run some rounds through it.

[EDIT]

See you aleady found a rifle.

Take a look at these.

If I was in your market, that is what I would get.

First range report with the MSR 10 was positive. Today was just a function test -- max range 25 yards. Ran 80 rounds of PPU M80 ammo through with nary a hiccup. I'm still looking around to find a range where I can get some distance (ideally 200 yards) but so far not issues with function. Also, the recoil was very mild (likely thanks to the muzzle brake). The wife also enjoyed the fireball from the muzzle...

After my weekend with the SLR107 and my boys, shooting it, I would definitely recommend this. So I have had this rifle for a few years, Bulgarian AK style rifle. I have two optics for the side rail. One is a Leupold VXR Patrol 30mm 4X scope with fire dot, sitting on a KVAR SM-13 rail. The other is the Kobra EKP-1S-03 red dot.
It has been a year at least since I zeroed the Kobra and another year at least since I worked with the scope.
So this weekend we put out some bowling pins, and gongs at 200 yds. Slide on the Kobra, and proceed to ring the gongs repeatedly. This is with Wolf 122 gr. HP. Hand it to my 11 yr. old and he hits the bowling pin at 200. Next we slide off the Kobra and slide the scope on and lock it down. 5 consecutive hits on the 8" plate at 200 yds. By then the barrel is hot.
I thought it was pretty cool the optics can be switched like that and still comeback to zero, especially since I haven't checked zero in 2 years.
Congrats on the MSR. I have two AR10s right now, an older 16" Armalite with OD green furniture and an MP10 withe SSA-E trigger and American Defense mount. Both will hold under 2" for 4 shots at 200 yds. Amazing rifles.

Don't forget the S&W M&P AR10. I rarely hear bad things and they are on my short list for an AR10 along with Aero.

For Grendel, I went with Atheris Rifle Co. with 0 complaints. But for a really short barrel, there the 11.5 (maybe 12.5) PSA Grendel upper...

I would get the one you "want" as any and all should do the trick with the right ammo.

Or a wild card, 7.62x39 rifle

My thoughts are to select any of the mentioned platforms and calibers you like and practice - become proficient as a marksman - that skill is much more effective with a swine’s demise than the tool choice.
