I took apart the custom pre-`64 Model 70 that my elderly father recently gifted me to install the action in a composite stock that he provided, and that I re-coated, and discovered quite a bit of rust.

most of it is mild pitting...

The pictures are after I scrubbed with a brass brush and much cleaning with CLP.

Got it assembled into the new stock..

But the rust has me greatly concerned. This is a pretty valuable action and I plan on keeping it until I die, and actually taking an elk with it.

I assume there are companies, or gunsmiths, that could take it apart and remove the rust and coat it either in something more robust, or re-blue it in the current matte finish.

Any idea what something like that costs? I had a Glock slide hard-chromed once for about $80 twenty years ago and that is the extent of my experience with firearms finishing.

I live at the coast and even stainless steel guns rust here.

Based on this 46 product long-term salt water testing, I now use Hoppes #9 solvent/WD-40 to clean surface rust and oil everything with WD-40 Professional (But not the silicone version) and no more rust issue - http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667

WD-40 Specialist Long-term Corrosion Inhibitor (Prevents rust for 2 years) - https://www.wd40.com/products/corrosion-inhibitor/

WD-40 Specialist Spray & Stay Gel Lubricant (Prevents rust for 1 year in salt spray) - https://www.wd40.com/products/spray-gel/

I now also use WD-40 Professional for all of my automotive/garden tools with very good results

Ive heard of a few people, including members here, using automotive wax on any metal parts covered by the stock for long periods of time. I am a big fan of that mystery military grease that comes in the tiny little clear plastic tubs with the yellow lid. I dont know what it is, but it only costs a nickel, and it sticks on there longer and better than anything else I’ve used. I dont own any stainless bolt guns, and rust has not been an issue for me, even in coastal rainy climates.

Any area you don't have to handle much and doesn't need lubrication, I'm a fan of the closest you can get to cosmoline.
Anything visible or that you will be touching, wax. There are several, I use Renaissance Wax because it keeps things pretty. It's on every gun I own now and not a spot of rust on them that wasn't there before. Not sure if it's really better than some other waxes, because I don't take my stuff through the beach or drag it around in the rain. Sure helped with humidity, though.

Ren Wax, supposedly does not get acidic over time and stays neutral. I have a little jar and it will probably last 20 years before I go through it all if ever. Johnson's Paste Was is also a common product I hear people using.

If it is already rusting in places, my guess is it will do it again for whatever reason. To have it last a log time, you might seriously consider having a pro gunsmith give you a recommendation and price to redo or keep rust at bay.

Do you have a link for that stuff? never heard of it. Has me curious.

Check this stuff out.

I imagine anything that protects metal for this guy would also work well in your environment. I'm in the desert southwest, so I don't worry about your issues.

Heres a picture of the grease I use. It seems to be in most gunstores for like 5 or 10 cents per tub. Its a convenient sized container to take on hunting trips. It just says “grease, rifle” on the lid.

There are a half dozen WD40 "Specialist"

Are you guys referring to the WD40 Specialist - "Long-term Corrosion Inhibitor" version?
Yes and Specialist Long-term Corrosion Inhibitor comes with "Protects metal from rust and corrosion for up to 2 years" claim - https://www.wd40.com/products/corrosion-inhibitor/

I am now also using Specialist Spray & Stay GEL LUBRICANT also as it tends to stick to metal/tool surfaces better with claim of "Prevents rust up to one year ... in salt spray" as I live in salty coastal area - https://www.wd40.com/products/spray-gel/

I have happily used BreakFree CLP and motor oil for decades without rust issues in dry deserts of CA central valley. But now living at the coast for retirement, WD-40 Specialist products definitely have prevented rust in the salty coastal climate.

I have not used the Specialist Silicone spray so I cannot endorse it and it DOES NOT come with prevents rust for 1 year claim - https://www.wd40.com/products/silicone-lubricant/

Check this stuff out.
I do ocean fishing so I will definitely check out the product - https://www.amazon.com/QMAXX-HS025-A16-1-Aerosol-Spray/dp/B007MECK64

Thanks!

I did some searching, on the premise that milspec lubricants are good enough for them, they're good enough for me.
It seems to be either Lubriplate 130-a or some type of Plastilube.

There is a marine product called Corrosion X you can find it like a boat place or Academy any I use this on all my firearms to protect them from rust. This really works and have real world first hand experience with it. I love saltwater fishing and one day I found a pair of needle nose pliers on the beach that were rusted shut. I could not open them so when I got home I sprayed them with the Corrosion X and and let it soak a couple of hours and I was able to open them to the and they work like a charm. The company makes one for guns to but I use the one made for marine products instead.

Anyone know how much it would cost roughly to have a rifle barrel/action exterior cleaned up and cerakoted? Im assuming they would sand or bead blast it first?
