Thinking of getting back into reloading soon and the weird Russian 50cal revolver shooting 1173gr bullets got me thinking.....anyone screwed around with heavy for the caliber bullets?

Like...320gr 44 specials, 300gr 45acp etc.

I am not looking at super magnumizing these, if I get these to 750-800fps.....cool

I have used a few heavy for caliber projectiles.

I've tried 200 gr in 38spl and 357 Mag. I didn't really see anything make me keep doing it, so I stopped.
I do regularly shoot 185gr lead in 357 Mag, it's a big meplat round flatnose.

I have an NEF rifle in 357 Mag that will chamber the 360DW brass easily, I plan to play with those 200gr in 360DW in that rifle.

In 44 Mag I've gone no heavier than 310gr. I see no reason to go heavier, the 310gr will kill anything I'm likely to shoot at. Probably pass completely through end-to-end, at that.

Sorry, I have not. I'm not a fan of heavy bullets. I also do not like light bullet either. I use the bullet weight which was used to develop the ammo. (158/160gr 38/357, 124/125gr 9mm)

I'm sure there are used for heavy for caliber bullets but I find wisdom in the creators like John Browing.

There's not really a usage here, more an excercise than anything

I don't think you'll be able to get a 320 grain 44 special to 750 fps. It would just require too much pressure . if you try it had better be in a robust revolver, I think however you'll run out of room for powder.

Itll probably be in Redhawk.

320 might be pushing it, I was mostly just using it as an example

357 RUGER BH 6 5/8 barrel
I like heavy for caliber, but heavy for caliber will reduce case capacity. So it’s somewhat of a trade off somewhere down the line. Good thing about BH is 1.710 available chamber length and I use most of it!
I use them for hunting mostly, but the heaviest I have tested is 172 gr Kieth LSWC. That is WHEN I get time to hunt!:(
But I AM looking at the 180+ WFN as we speak. That flat nose is the ticket! I call them Flying Trash Cans!
For Target, I use 158 LSWC.

Maybe no correlation here, but I usually run 115 gr Lead in my Tokarev.
Pretty dang accurate & flies at 1300+fps.
(I run 'em mainly cuz that's what I could get during the last obamanation scare.

Although I should go back to 85gr & run 'em a bit slower.
My load's pretty hard on the gun.
