What's your favorite 284 win powder?

I loaded some speer 145gr spbt at starting powder charge. They shot about 12" lower than factory ammo at 300yds.

Primers look very similar on my loads compared to factory, I don't think I can go up more than 1 grain powder charge....that is yet to be determined. Idk if 1 grain of powder can bring POI up that much???

I'm using H4350 it's a standard short action 2.800 COAL rifle.

I want to duplicate the Winchester Power Point 150 point of impact wise, so I can take factory or reloads hunting confidently.

Lighter bullets 4350, heavier bullets 4831 - looking at load data, reading some forums and what Bill M. said - works in .280 Rem.

Note - 4350 has been hard to find. I havent been out to test (silly stay-at-home) but I did find some IMR4451 - similar to 4350 but look up specific 4451 data.

I worked up to 51.0gr with the Gameking 150gr bullet. Got a pretty good replication of impact as a box of factory Winchester ammo at 150yds.

After I went from 51.0 grains to 51.5 the bullet impact went up about 1.5" then went up another 0.5gr (to 52.0gr) the bullet impact went up another 1.5". So the 52.0gr charge was 3" higher on target than the 51.0gr...…

I thought this was odd...…. usually its the other way around I though. But I also thought this impact seemed very sensitive and wasn't sure I liked that. I was at 150yds.

What was the accuracy of those loads? From the wild swings in elevation you described you certainly aren't in an accuracy node. Also, I don;t think that looking at primers is a very good way to judge pressure, especially if they aren't the same brand from the same era.

And I also don't know if this is true of Speer bullets in general, but 180 Hot Cores shoot 8" lower at 200 yds. than 180 Partitions in my 30-06 with the same charge. 180 Hornady's are almost the exact same POI. I was very disappointed as I was hoping to be able to interchange the two bullets as you planned. Maybe try another bullet just to see?

Laphroaig, accuracy is hard to say. I only had 5 shots of each charge weight and did not shoot all of them since we were dealing with so many black flies and mosquitos it was not good shooting conditions. I would say possibly 1 MOA, but like I say the 0.5gr charge difference shifting impact say 3" is NOT cool!!!

Next time I'm backing up from 150yards to 100 yards. With an 8 power scope the crosshairs cover up the small targets I was shooting at at 150. There's just too much risk I think with the small scope at 150 when developing loads. I was using one of the targets with big bullseye in middle and 4 others around it, like a 5 dice looks.

I wonder if I should try a flat base bullet. That's what the win super x (I think they are) load factory. I fired 1 shot out of that box and hit 1" high (iirc) at 150yds. First shot of the day, we couldn't find it with the big scope cuz it was so close to bullseye and hard to see. So the flat bases work.

Your thoughts?

Is the H4350 a great powder or should I go to another?

I want temp stable.
