I am starting to reload for 284 Win. Projectiles will be 150 to 165 grain. I have not used the Alliant Reloder 19 but was recommended it by a major manufacturer to use with the ELD-X 150 grain. Also I see a F class world champion runs the Hodgdon H4350, another powder I haven't worked with. Any recommendations?

Speer data (which I will probably run their BTSP 160) recommends IMR 4350, which I have used and have on hand. They publish a 160 @ approx 2600 to 2800 fps. My gut is to go with this to start out, but I don't know if the other powders mentioned are way better, or not a huge difference.

Rifle is a hunting rifle 24" bbl.

Thanks in advance

The H4350 is one of the newer temp stable powders, RL-19 is not. I've shied away from most of RL powders for this reason. 160 gr HPBT or SBT is all I've ever shot in my Rem 7mm Mag using IMR4350. I give up a little velocity to some powders but this has always given me good results.

I use the RL series, and burn 17 in a most of the cartridges that take 4350 class powders. The other in that range I like is Superformance. Those will probably work in the 284. I use h4350, and Imr 4350, but get better velocity with the others.
I would avoid the RLs if you hunt in serious temperature swings, otherwise work up at the temp you usually hunt at and go from there.

It maybe too slow for the .284, but I run Retumbo in my 6.5-284, under 140class bullets.

Other temp stables powders that IVE used, which isn't to say a whole lot, are the H and IMR 4831s, and IMR 7828.

I definitely hunt temperature swings I'd say anywhere from 10 degrees to 60 degrees Fahrenheit outdoor temp. I'm ignorant to what range in temp makes a difference.

That's enough I'd be cautious using the less stable rls...might try rl-16

4831SC or one of the new endurons a try if you can get them. I still need to try some of those.
H4350 and regular imr or h4831 are that both are pretty stable, but Superformance is less so, and I'd do my load testing in the middle of your temp range if possible.

You get little better load density with H-4350 and it's one of Hodgdon Extreme powders so it's insensitive to Hot/Cold temp and meters good. I have used it in my 284 along with R-17 and R-26. I use H-4350 in 30-06 and 270.

I know your rifle is different. I think how he loads and has information on bullets and how much is in case etc
