Charter Arms .41 Magnum?

Forgive my ignorance, but I drift in and out of following gun stuff depending on my interest level. A couple of years ago I bought a Charter Arms .41 Magnum revolver when they first came out. Just now, however, I searched Gunbroker and found nothing on them. Didn't see them at Bud's, and I didn't see them on the Charter Arms website. If I remember correctly, they're in the Mag Pug line.

I found the .45 LC Charter revolver that they released about the same time, however, so they still make that version. Did they stop making the Charter Arms .41 Magnum? If so, when did that happen and why?

I googled the gun, but all that came up were a bunch of stores that seemed to be out of stock of the gun.
 
As far as I know, they are still making them, but they always seemed to make them in batches. I figure that the whole virus shutdown - which affected Connecticut quite badly with # of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths - greatly affected their production schedule. I have a 45 Colt model, got it in 2018 - it is the same frame as the 41 Mag Pug, though they call the 45 Colt a "Bulldog XL" instead of the Mag Pug.
 
Thanks for the information guys. The problem is, I follow Blue Brick's link and I get the page for the .41 Magnum. If I go to Charter's site and put the model number in the search function, I also get the page for the .41 Magnum, but when I go to the Mag Pug page (the .41 is a Mag Pug) from the "Products" menu, it doesn't list the .41 on that page. Everything on the Mag Pug page is .357, and I don't see a separate page for .41. Unless I'm missing something, which is VERY possible.

Might just be a website glitch...or me missing the very obvious somewhere. :D Here's what I'm talking about:

I think you're right about that, greenmtnguy. Buds only has one model of Charter in stock.

Right now allmost all guns are hard to get...and those that are on the shelves are often priced higher than normal.

Thanks Riomouse911. I'm not really looking for one, though. Just curious why I wasn't seeing a gun that I bought recently...wondering if there was something else going on.

You guys have been educating me on the gun shortage, so thanks to all, as well. Hopefully the industry - and our economy - can get back in gear before long.

I agree it’s odd, but I had the same experience when I tried to look into the gun a couple years back. It’s a glitch that never got ironed out. Kinda like the front site on the .32 professional...
 
Id like to see a Charter Professional in 41 mag

Charter right before this Virus .. we’re working on several different models
One being a aluminum framed 6 shot 38spl ..
Yep , a aluminum Bulldog frame
And switching the 32 H&R Undercoverette to a
6 shot ....
Alot of “irons in the fire “ for a small hands on company ...
 
I've been handloading and shooting .41 Mag since 1988 for a number of guns but the thought of shooting them from a Charter revolver sounds like it would be about as enjoyable as a root canal. I love Charters and I can shoot a .44 Spl. model all day but .41 Mag? No thanks....... I also don't think the gun would hold up for very long in .41 Mag caliber.

The Charter 41 mag is built on the Charter XL frame
same as the 5 shot 45 Colt , 45 ACP and 6 Shot 357

The cylinder diameter is a wee bit larger than the
S&W L frame cylinder

I wrote this a while back and didn't bother to edit out the info on the Taurus.

I have a Charter Arms .41 mag Pug (23 oz) and a Taurus Titanium 2.5” .41 Magnum (21 oz)

Here are some chrono results from the Charter 2.5”. Labradar results at the muzzle and 55 deg f (45 deg f for the last two)

180gr Barnes ….… 1,195 fps (21 es)
230gr HSM …….… 1,145 fps (28 es)
230gr Underwood .. 1,263 fps (18 es)
250gr Grizzly …….. 1,169 fps (4 es)
210gr Fed Swift A Frame .. 1,191 fps (1 es)
210gr Grizzly Punch …….. 1,239 fps (20 es)

Grizzly Punch is a bit too long to function reliably in either. Pulled three of the factory bullets. The factory rounds were loaded with 22.0gr of powder that looks exactly like H110/W296.

Resized two cases and loaded one with 20.5gr of the Grizzly factory powder (w/factory primer) and one with 20.5gr H110 (w/CCI350) and reseated the bullets to an OAL of 1.581”.

Loaded the third bullet in a starline .41 special case primed with CCI350 and 18.0gr of the Grizzly factory powder from the original cartridge. Crimped in the bullets crimp grove it’s OAL was 1.528”.

Following are the chronograph for the 2.5” Tauras Ti Tracker. LabRadar 35 deg F.

150gr Underwood Leghigh Xtr Defender …. 1,342 fps

210gr Punch – 41 Special 18.0gr H110 …. 1,149 fps

210gr Punch – Reseated 1.581” Factory … 1,115 fps (no discernable diff between powders – (ES - 20 fps)

250gr WFNGC Grizzly Cartridge factory …. 1,159 fps

215gr SWCBB HiTec, 6.8gr Univ Deep Seated and crimped over front dr band …. 839 fps.

The 250gr WFNGC Grizzly is a handful in both guns. Overall, the Taurus recoils a bit less than the Charter. The Charter recoil reminds me of shooting similar loads thru a S&W M329 Ti/Sc 44 mag. The 215gr SWC over 6.8 univ is easy shooting recoil wise.

In my hands, both guns shoot quite high at 25 yds with heavier loads.

The 250gr WFNGC Grizzly is a handful in both guns. Overall, the Taurus recoils a bit less than the Charter. The Charter recoil reminds me of shooting similar loads thru a S&W M329 Ti/Sc 44 mag.

I've shot those same Grizzly loads out of my 57 and they were a handful in it. Beat the hell out of my middle finger, I can't imagine shooting them out of a pug.
Or would I want to.
 
To those who have wondered about it...yes, the Charter Arms in .41 Magnum is a handful...and then some. Even with the loads that are claimed to be somewhat milder. As I recall, I shot what (I think) were advertised as "cowboy" loads, and they still were very stout in terms of felt recoil. I really can't imagine shooting the Grizzly or Buffalo Bore stuff through it (I've never done it. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it.) I guess that's why after I bought the Charter I went out and also bought a nice used Blackhawk in .41 :p. Both guns are of very good quality, but are for very different purposes. IMO, the Charter should hold up well if used for it's intended purpose - a non-range gun that's shot occasionally and carried as a pack gun to protect against larger dangerous predators like mountain lions or black bears, but maybe not grizzlies (though it might work on them, too.)

The Blackhawk can be used as a range gun. The Charter not being a range gun is a problem that takes care of itself: put a cylinder or two of moderate .41 through it...and you'll think, that ought to do it for today. ;)
 
The CA would make a great .41 Special....

I have two of the Taurus Titanium Trackers in 4" and 6" barrels...would love to find a matching 2" but they are rare to come up for sale and expensive when they do.
