12 round series of 454 casull handloads from my ruger Redhawk alaskan

240 xtp mag, 15.0 longshot, 1.750 OAL 7.5 Rem primers

Average 1093 fps
ES 82
SD 26.1

Kinda expected more velocity and not great ES numbers. Need to double check my crimp maybe. Felt like I reproduced factory crimp of hornady rounds using same bullets best I could with a lee FCD though.

Need a good source for affordable bullets too. These are too pricey. Maybe something coated or plated would be okay if that's all the faster I'm pushing them from the short barrel.

Very shootable, doesnt try to tear my fingers off , or knock dust off the overhead lights and equipment in the range like the factory hornady 454 did haha. No numbers on those, and not really in a hurry to shoot em again, but would be good to have reference i guess.

Cost of "magnum" built bullets for the 454 is what got me into casting. For the cost of 200 Cast Performance 265 or 300gr plus shipping, I purchased the Lee 300gr RF mold, and a 1000 gas checks. I already had the pot and wheel weights from making fishing weights. Took me a month or so of research and questions but I've been pouring them ever since.

Loaded over AA-9 they shoot remarkably well. If you shoot yours a lot, add up the cost and compare you might find it worth it.

Thanks for the replies. Those MBC bullets look pretty good. Anyone able to give me the thr code? From a search, looks like its PMed to avoid just anyone being able to use it.

That AA9 powder did look pretty good in the books. Good to know some are using it and liking it. Wanting something short of full house loads in this little guy, but could be more than the longshots giving me.

Was kinda expecting to see 2400 good for it, havent seen any loads for it yet but havent looked everywhere. Was planning on getting some for 357 mag. Was told it would work well in the Coonan for mid/upper range stuff.

Thanks for the link to your article mr.revolverguy , cool to see the barrel length /velocity effects.
