I knew yesterday when I filled out my paperwork and paid for a new handgun purchase that with the way things are going, my background check wouldn't be coming back before the end of the business day, and apparently now, not by the end of the following business day. How long have the background checks been taking in your area?

It’s not uncommon in times of high buyer ship for them to take 3 days or more. Add on lower staff levels (still gotta have humans) and it’ll take even longer.

If you’ve got nothing to stop you passing you’ll be fine, sit back, relax, you’ll get your gun when you get it.

If you live in one of those weird states your FFL can release the firearm to you after 3 days of not getting a NICS result.

Bought a new pistol this morning guy at the door said background checks maybe 25 min mine was around 15 min . A few in line were picking up guns bought last Friday or Saturday LGS is closed Mondays

Florida dealers do not contact FBI NICS but a state agency. FBI NICS is not "backed up".

FBI NICS taking 15-25min?................nope. If it takes your dealer that long to dial a phone# or type the eCheck he needs better help running his checks.
Alabama contacts FBI NICS directly, by phone it takes less than four minutes, by eCheck as quickly as you can type what the customer wrote on his 4473.

^^^^How about them apples...learn something new everyday. I always thought Florida went through the FBI. That would explain things....Florida is a hot mess right now. Well Florida is always a hot mess, just more so now:D

Just got a text from my buddy at the gun shop. Approval just came through..but they're closed now:( Good news is I may be able to get to the range tomorrow after picking it up:thumbup:

It's good we delay all these guns from the hands of law abiding citizens that already have many guns in their inventory-

Makes all the sense in the world to me....

And makes me so happy we make some lame lib feel better about themselves because of it.......

NOT!

Nah. Strikes me a weird you’d realease a gun to someone without getting a confirmation.
Weird? No whats weird is thinking a confirmation is required. If the FBI thinks my buyer shouldn't possess a firearm, three business days is plenty of time to make that decision.

The Brady Law does not prohibit the dealer from transferring the firearm on or after the Brady date. Being that the FBI NICS often NEVER updates a delayed transaction, dealers who wait for a proceed may be waiting a loooooong time.

To me, that's unconscionable. The intent of the Brady Law is to deny the transfer of firearms to a prohibited person....NOT grant permission to those who are not prohibited persons.

In Tennessee they go thru the TBI, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and charge you $10 for each background check. Moved here from Mississippi and they used NICS no $10 fee and it went thru quicker.

You have your opinion I have mine. That’s the great part of this forum, there’s room for everyone!

Each state may or may not do things differently. Senseless arguing over it, in my opinion. If you don’t like how another state does things why should you care? You don’t live there.

So, more appropriately, the title of this thread should have been the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Firearm Eligibility Program is Backed Up....but FDLEFEP when pronounced...sounds like I'm having a stroke. That and I didn't realize Florida didnt use the NICS. Anyway, 28 hours to complete and return my approved status. That's wild, longest I've ever had to wait, just before the '16 election was about 30 minutes. Wonder if that correlates to a 5500% increase in firearm sales in Florida

Every state and US territory uses FBI NICS because federal law says they do.
Some states have chosen to be the POC or Point of Contact. Dealers in those states contact a state agency instead of contacting FBI NICS directly.
Often, those states POC's charge dealers (and the customer ultimately) to use a service that is free to dealers in nonPOC states.

Oregon is one where the State Police are the gatekeepers

As of yesterday they were backlogged at about 4000 bgc’s. That results in an estimated 7-8 day wait for the purchaser.

So now we have a de facto “waiting period”.

It's called FREEDOM.
You may call it that. I call it irresponsible. That’s the last I’ll say because it’s entirely besides the point.

The POINT is that’s sometimes it’s takes a while to get an approval, it’s not abnormal and requires patience.
