While shopping online the other day I came across a Weatherby Vanguard for $150 bucks and a Browning X-bolt for arond $500 as I recall. I immediately tried to score a couple but they were out everywhere I checked. Called the store and the guy there said he'd never heard of it. Do you suppose they only had like one nation wide or what? Did anybody else try to get one or see the add?

Wow, imagine that. Prices too good to believe, on items they don’t have in stock.

“I could sell ‘em that cheap if I didn’t have any, too!”

They get you on the site hoping to get you to see something else you may want.

Not quite “bait and switch”, but close, in my opinion.
Why bother listing items you don’t have in stock and cannot back order? (Looking at you, Potterfield...)

“Well, so the search robots get us traffic, obviously!”

Doesn’t make it right. I bet you don’t like your time wasted...:scrutiny:

Yes, a cheap ploy.

Do you have a link or anything to the advertisement? I get Cabela's Fliers in the mail and the last reference to for example:
Browning X-Bolt Stalker Bolt-Action Rifle
I have not seen a Browning X Bolt for under $600 in about 25 years. The Cabela's fliers are available online and this is the current flier which I tossed. The linked is the July 9 through 22 flier.

If you look at the bottom of the ad in the link there are some in the $550 range. Have no idea if that’s the model you want

I wouldn't say it was totally unethical. I was able to pick up a savage 12fv and a thompson center venture for 500 total. I did have to try many different items on sale to find some in stock though.

I might. For instance, I have the $800 for a Savage Benchrest Model 12 in .308, that they advertise in @Reloadron ‘s posted link at 50% off.
There is no Cabelas that has one.
It is fairly simple to find the zip code of every Cabelas and try it in the store locator to find which store has the rifle.

So, they are lying. That rifle is not “on sale”, they don’t have any. How could it possibly be on sale if there are no stores trying to get rid of one?

They only had one and sold it yesterday.

Wouldn’t you know it, that always happens to me...
:)

Or it’s click-bait that runs up their website traffic so the manufacturers that already sell their products in Cabelas will buy ad space in their webpages.

I fell for it. I would absolutely buy a “real” M12 with a .308 boltface for $799. But they had none, thus wasting my time.

For a whole variety of reasons, mostly good ones, I will never shop at Cabela's/Bass Pro again. I was staggered by the lack of integrity that store and regional management often displayed when I worked there in a post-retirement gig. Once I left, voluntarily, I decided not to return as a customer There's nothing that they sell that I can't buy at better prices with better warranties elsewhere or on-line. I also found that Capital One, their credit card vendor (Cabelas/Bass Pro's real business ) was a predatory card issuer. BTW, the annual personnel turnover of "the world's foremost outfitters" at Cabela's averaged 67% annually at the store I worked at. There's a lot of information in that fact.

YMMV,

Yes and originally Cabela's managed their own Visa prior to Bass Pro buying them. Wife and I used a Cabela's signature black card for just about everything and after things changed I began using my Harley Davidson Visa for everything. After the changes they weren't doing me any favors. Actually still have some Cabela's bucks I should spend and that will pretty much end what was a good relationship.

Yeah i tried the same thing the other day looking for a hunting rifle for my wife. Tried each cartridge and called when the sales wouldn't go through. They gave me the same bs about their stock not being updated.

I heard from a manager at Cabelas that the "sale" rifles are in stock, but only one or two per store. You can get one but you must be the first person to click buy as soon as the ad comes out. I don't find that ethical and don't play their game.

They are hosing one of my friends too though. He ordered a 12fv in 6.5 creed two and a half weeks ago and it’s still not in while both of mine showed up in three days.

This I do not doubt. Like you, I fail to see the ethics of advertising nationwide for one rifle that could be sold in store with the same deal. Just having one of the benchrest models 10% off would have sold it.

YMMV,

Average annual employee turnover in retail jobs is just over 60% and gets worse the more part-time employees they use (part-time average turnover is around 80%), so while 67% isn't good, it also isn't that bad.
Retail jobs just suck, so I've heard.

That being said I've avoided buying firearms from Bass Pro and Cabelas for 15 years, but I just broke down last week and bought a Savage 12 online. I'm going to go pick it up this week, though I've read online accounts of how bad their inventory management is so I'll probably call before leaving the house to make sure it's actually physically in the store.
