Like a Glock.

Make sure the gun is unloaded. Start disassembly as usual with the slide locked back, turn the disassembly lever, allow the slide to move forward until it aligns with the frame as per normal position.

Now, pull the trigger to fire it (like you would on a Glock), and the slide should come off as normal.

You got almost instant good advice. What was holding the slide on the frame was the sear holding back the striker. When you pulled the trigger, that released.

But I sure hope you guys were not at all brutal when trying to get the slide off, before you pulled the trigger. All the forces you applied were focused at the point where the sear and the sticker meet, and a burr there could make you trigger pull noticeably worse.

Well there was no takedown lever installed when it was presented to me. So what I did was remove trigger pin and two takedown pins and everything came off the frame.

Where do we go to report a case of pistol abuse?

The takedown lever on the M&P pistols is a part which is not supposed to be removed from the frame. It is just rotated to release the slide. In any case, no matter what the story is behind this missing part, the pistol cannot be fired without the slide moving forward right off the rails. Good news, you can order parts from S&W.

Don't forget to flip the little greenish-yellow thingy in the magwell down. I just cleaned an M&P40 tonight and had to remind myself to flip the little dingus thing down before trying to remove the slide. It's an annoying little detail I often forget.

Except for the M&P Bodyguard .380, which is a removable pin. OP didn't specify which M&P pistol he was talking about.
