What's everyone's opinion of the S&W M&P? I'm seriously considering getting one in a .45 and have narrowed it down to it & an XD 45 & possibly a Glock 21. Does anyone have experience with all 3? Any input would be much appreciated.

My M&P compact 9mm has had 100% perfect functioning. I've only held a .45, but it fits my hand far better than the Glock 21 (even the SF), which feels like a 2x4 attached to a brick. No experience with the XD in this caliber.

I have an M&P .45 and Glock 21SF. Both are very good full size guns. I've shot a friends XD .45 as well, and it seems to be a good gun. I don't think you would be disappointed with any of those.

What specifically do you want to know?

M&P

I have a pair of M&Ps; a full-size 45 and a compact 9mm. They're both excellent pistols. Handle and shoot well, digest whatever I cram into the mags, accurate, and easy to take apart for cleaning.

I think S&W did their homework and came up with a winner.

Here's a recent poll done about them, FWIW:

I love my M&P, and actually sold my Glocks after I got it. I don't think there's any comparison, but that's just me. I've come to think that anyone who's still die hard about the Glock system has to be kidding. The point to aim on an M&P is dead on, whereas my Glocks point to aim at the sky. The die-hards are in denial, IMHO. There's really no comparison.

I really prefer the M&P over all of the non-custom combat handguns that are available today. I haven't handled an XD, but I hear nothing but good things about them. I just don't like all the safety stuff on them, and they are substantially heavier than the M&P and Glock. That makes a difference if you are going to carry it a lot. Still, some folks prefer some extra heft to their handguns. If you are one of those, the XD might be for you. FWIW, Smith & Wesson's customer service is excellent, and service after the sale goes a long way with me.

After owning a ton of 9's, it is the only one to ever have a jam of any sort. Just once. Once was too many.
