Been reading or re reading some of the Dave McC posts on the TFL sticky on the shotgun board from around 2001.
One thing that struck me was the 2001 to 2004 threads that included urgings to aquire and store more ammo for everything because of possible shortages
I have long thought it a good idea to have a tleast minimal ammo in storage and have done so since I could afford it.
Sure there were times when I was living in cracker box apartments or when diapers and baby wipes took up more room than my ammo storage, but never a time when I did not have "Something" in storage with a promise to self not to break into it without FIRST buying ammo to replace it with.
I recently saw a young person just over 21 that had managed to buy a new factory made AR 15. This young professional had to wait until 21 because of Florida's panic over Semi auto rifles a few years back with the Ft. Lauderdale high school shooting. youngster unfortunately did not start buying ammo as soon as possible so now managed to get a rifle during the Covid panic, but has only 40 rounds of ammo and little luck in finding more.
I have run into folks that have a only handgun for home defense that have now less than a box of ammo and can find no more.
Buckshot or Slugs? Have not seen any in months except a few boxes of the shorty Mexican slugs at a hardware store....I almost bought them but then considers some folks have none.
I am fairly certain this Covid panic will pass and when it does, will you have learned from history? How much room does a hundred rounds of each hand gun in your house ammo or a hundred rounds of your first choice rifle ammo or even a 500 round brick of .22LR take up? Stashed away in the back of a closet with the label "do not open without replacement ammo" it will likely take less room than you think. Smaller than a bread box comes to mind.
