A while back, several friends and I were discussing how to best deal with a shotgun or rifle (AR) that’s been shot hard and put away dirty too many times and is now a filthy carbon crusted mess.

One guy said he uses cheap store brand baby wipes to get most of the crud and grit off. I thought that was kinda nuts, but the next time I cleaned my CZ 712 shotgun, I gave them a try. I gotta say, I’m impressed.

I bought the local store brand unscented baby wipes:

and they really did a great job wiping the built up funk off the gun. They are now a staple in my garage and for dirty jobs like AR internals, grimy dirty tools, and other stuff that’s just filthy, they are a great first step.

I do finish up with a wipe down with some type of CLP like Lucas, Slip2000, or Ballistol, but as a first step digging into a dirty job, these things work great!

What are baby wipes for? Getting shtuff off of other shtuff. I keep them handy at home and at work, not to mention in the car. It’s helpful to have them in abundance since I have a 3 month old, but even before I kept them handy. They just cut the crud. I have used them for cleaning guns before, but I dislike them in that role. The moisture element seams a bit soapy and can leave a residue, but if you go back through with another cleaner following the rough wipe down as you mentioned then your good.

I keep them around for a lot of uses. Never thought about gun cleaning. I don't doubt that they clean, but they are water based and soapy. Seems like you'd have to clean the gun a 2nd time to prevent rust.

I mainly use them for really dirty stuff like after hundred of rounds through an AR or a shotgun. And yes, I follow up with CLP

Never thought about using them to clean my firearms. But they do work great cleaning up my truck. Gets the grim off.

You can get gun cleaning wipes made specifically for the purpose that are soaked with a gun cleaning solvent/protectant/lubricant. BreakFree, Otis, Remington, Ballistol, Tetra Gun, and Hoppes (and others) have their own versions.

They are all sorts of handy.

I don't know what your family plans are, but I repurposed our diaper bag as a range bag. It has lots of pockets and a heavy vinal pouch that is great to toss the empties into.
