I told a friend who just bought his first muzzleloader, go ahead and buy all that cleaning crap but you'll be buying a lot of it. I'll just keep using hot soapy water. Eventually he came around to my way of thinking.

I've noticed over the past years that this topic and that of bullet/wad lube always generates loads of controversy. I don't care what you say, mine is the best !:p:D

Actually barbie, rust is ferris oxide which can only occur when the metal is permitted to be exposed to moisture long enough for the chemical reaction to occur. The iron bonds slowly to oxygen atoms releasing hydrogen. As long as the metal is dried thoroughly and protected with oil etc, there will be no rust.

btw, where, in this day and age do you get corrosive caps?

I have always been told the best way to clean a dirty front stuffer is to fill the bath tub up with HOT water and soap, then scrub the living daylights out of the barrel and lock. Then you wipe it down/swab the barrel to get the water off/out. Then you apply grease/oil as required to the metal parts and reassemble everything.

I have used the Awesome brand cleaner and it does work very well for automotive cleaning needs, and for mopping the floors. I bought it at the local dollar tree, but i have seen it at all of the other dollar stores in the area. It is a good value brand product that I have no problem using for any cleaning.

DiHydrogen Monoxide [DHMO] is what you're thinking of.
It is extremely dangerous stuff.
Take care.

Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to
millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:
- Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
- Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
- Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
- DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
- Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.

The list just goes on and on...
lol. I was thinking the emphasis was wrong. hydrogen dioxide would have been HO2.

Hot soapy water to clean. Plain Hot water to rinse. Hot metal dries right off. Air compressor to blow out the cracks and holes just in case. Oil in the innards. Wax on the outside. Started the black powder thing in the early '70s. No rust, ever.

Ha! I wanna see the dude fill that bathtub with hot water, clean a BP barrel in it and explain to the wife what that black ring around the tub has to do with that awful rotten egg smell! I expect he'll end up taking his bath outside at the water hose!

Why do you think these guns are cleaned in a bathtub?
