I'm trying to downsize. At some point, I'd like to get into shooting clays but this is not the gun for that and I don't really have much of a use for it. It's barely used and just stays in the safe - and I need the room. What is a fair price for this gun?

Yeah I know it is - what do they generally sell for? $200-300? This is just your basic Remy home defender, not the whistle and bells of shotguns being sold today.

Please post specifics and if possible a picture. Without so much as a model number in the original post I feel comfortable saying that a used shotgun is worth somewhere between $1 and $1000000.

You're right of course. I'm a lousy photographer and it's night. It's a Remington Express Magnum aka Home defender. Pics below...

Normally I like to find out how much the same gun, or one very similar, is selling for new. Somewhere between 50-75% of that is usually a fair price. Of course some rare guns appreciate in value, and some really cheap guns don't hold that much value. And these aren't normal times. Lots of folks looking for guns where none are available and they will pay a premium.

People are going gaga right now...We recently had a post on here showing where some yahoo paid $2,100 for a USED Mossberg 590A1 in a Gun Broker auction.

My local police-oriented retailer listed the exact same shotgun brand new for $498.00 last week.

If you put it for sale out there at a price where online auction selling prices are at, and maybe even offer a 5- round box of 00 buck to go with it, it’ll probably sell for a lot more than you expect.

Good luck .

Stay safe.

FWIW, I got a buyer for a Mav 88 HD with an extra 22" screw in choke barrel for 350 in a cpl days.

I priced it to sell under my terms that were only convenient to me and that was worth it for me.
(I restricted the buyer pool; They had use my FFL (15 min away) which is more inconvenient for them as they have to go twice and I wasnt very flexible on my avaliable times to meet either )

If you have the means to advertise it for sale (online classifieds where legal, on here, GunBroker) you'll get top dollar and can expect $350+ pretty easily. Taken to a gun or pawn shop, more likely in the $200-$250 range even though they can't get them right now. Like George P said, an extra barrel in 28" vent rib, with screw in chokes will probably run $125 or so. Maybe less since they're not a hot commodity right now.

Wow, that's a lot less than I would have expected.
Go even cheaper and buy a parts lot from Gunbusters on Gunbroker. You will get essentially a whole gun less the reciever and you will have spare parts for absolutely anything that breaks. Parts lots for shotguns typically aren’t very expensive.

there’s one for sale now. Kinda ugly, but bidding starts at $20. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/878171245

As some others here have more or less pointed out, shotguns with shorter barrels that people envision as an HD gun are selling for historically crazy high prices right now. Guns that would have brought $350 - $400 in February may bring literally 2x that now. Here's a wacko example of a gun like the OP's, and there are many others.

LORD, some people are nuts. That price is approaching Weatherby Athena territory...for a 425.00 shotgun.

There is going to be someone really upset in a few months when that Remington is worth under 300 bucks after the first round is fired through it.

Stay sane!

Right now it's worth as much as its ever going to be worth, nows the time to sell.

I've seen used shotguns for sale anywhere from $75 to $125,000 dollars. So somewhere in that range should cover it.

Edit: I now see you've got an 870. That narrows it down considerably. ;)

Personally I would keep it "for a Home Defender". Buy a 28" barrel for clays. How much will you be shooting clays? No need to be spending a lot of money right now. You might end up wanting a home defender in the near future and then you would be kicking yourself. Might have to buy the same gun back at double or triple the cost.

Looking at the auction for the $1525 Remington 870, there were 49 bids.
7 bidders chased it above $600.
3 of these bidders had no ratings on GB
2 of the bidders had 1 rating
2 bidders had 2 ratings, one of those with a C grade.

So, it looks like these gun buyers could be new, or they are turning to GB to find guns whereas they used to source elsewhere. I've noticed this on a lot of auctions where the prices ran way up - the buyers seemed to be new to GB.
