I don't like serrated edges, change my mind!

DustGrmt,

As I mentioned, PE H1 doesn't hold an edge as long as other steels Spyderco uses. It is also harder to sharpen than most of those other steels, absolutely.

As a work-hardening steel, it changes characteristics when the serrations are added.

I'm still somewhat unsure of what a serrated edge is supposed to accomplish. My feeling at the moment is that if the rest of the knife is dull then the serrations still might be able to accomplish something. For those folks who can't be bothered to keep their knives sharp that might be worthwhile. For the sort of fellow who posts on this subforum, though...
That's one thing I remember from my days in scouting, a dull knife is much more dangerous than a sharp knife. I like "normal" edges. I also try and find high carbon steel blades and not stainless, though they are getting harder to find. One of the best knives I ever owned was a old Marbles, man you could get that thing SHARP. To bad it got stolen.

I've tried sharpening an H-1 TUSA dive knife, and it's not easy, but then the blade on that knife has never been used, just the tip for stabbing. My other H-1 PE blades are reserved for emergency use only and still carry the factory edge. I doubt that I will ever buy another H-1 PE knife.

But now that I hear H-1 has good edge retention for SE, it sounds like the perfect application for that steel.

It really does make a difference when it comes to H1. I have no use for a PE in H1, but as a purpose driven just-in-case utility/backup/emergency, I really like how the SE performs. I've been super happy with the ARK. I dont think I've taken it off in a week and keep forgetting I have it on.

I ordered 30 SE ARKs, but they must be in short supply, because that's the only part of my order not filled yet. Looking forward to the Endela and Counter Puppy (other fulfilled knives I ordered as gifts). Both SE.

I was curious if you knew how far the tang extends into the ARK. Its an absolute non-issue for me. I have 20 year old kardas with a nub of a tang that are still rocking.

I was just curious how they got the little bugger so doggone lightweight.

The steel is thin...by my request. But no, I'm not certain exactly how far into the handle the tang goes. Never heard of anyone breaking one, though.

I've had a few knives with partially serrated edges and they never really grew on me. Never owned a fully serrated edge.
I used to like fully serrated knives and owned a few (including an original Spyderco Police). After a while, I started thinking that combination edges (part serrated, part straight edge) were the way to go. Nowadays I really prefer 100% straight edges, and avoid knives with serrated or combo edges.
