Local shop was out of 2400 and suggested w572. I’ve seen very few posts about w572 and wanted some opinions on its use in 357mag and 44mag. Looks to be more economical as well.

What do you all think?

According to Hodgdon's data it will work in the .357 Magnum, but seems to be more comparable to a powder like Unique than 2400. In other words it burns faster than 2400, quite a bit faster.

But in this day and time, I'd buy anything I could get my hands on.

35W

I'm not highly experienced in hand loading but I purchased Hodgdon H110 = Winchester 296 for loading 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum cartridges to their potential.

Both are currently showing available for online purchase with free ship-to-store (no shipping or HazMat fees) for pickup at the designated store if you have a Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops brick & mortar store in your area.

Hodgdon H110 $29.99 / lb

Winchester 296 (same powder different label) $29.99 / lb

Looking at the manufacturer’s online data for 357 mag 158gr it’s 1265fps at max for 2400 and 1241 for w572. Granted I’m not sure if a gold dot is “slicker” making for a not so equal. For nearly half the charge using 572 it seems like a reasonable compromise. Was just curious if anyone had trouble dialing in accuracy with 572 before trying it out.
Thanks for all the replies!

The Gold Dot is a plated bullet... so that's possible. I've also noted that published data can vary wildly from reality. Good luck, and let us know how it works out!

W572 is supposedly the same powder as Hodgdon HS-7, but of course different lots would have up to 10% variation in burn rates. Some older manuals list HS-7 loads. It's burn rate falls between HS-6 (W540) and Blue Dot.

In this thread maintained bymember @LiveLife indicates HS-7 was identical to W571. W572 doesn't appear on this list to be associated with any identical powder under the Hodgdon label vs Winchester label same contents.

Thanks, Zorg, I must have seen a typo somewhere listing W572 when it should have been W571. I will make changes to my notes. Can I assume, correctly, that W572 is slower than W571? They should be very, very close to the same burn rate.

I thought that was a typo at first... I recall W571, not W572. Winchester doesn't catalog W571 any longer, so I'm guessing W572 is their replacement, for whatever reason.
