I have a Ruger American I bought about 3 years ago for deer hunting. Its a .450 bushmaster and has a flush fit 3 round mag. The stock is solid, it doesn't have a removable mag well or any panels that can be taken off.

I haven't had any trouble with it so far but I have read bad things about the factory mags and would rather not spend $40 on them, and I would also like to have a couple that hold more than 3 rounds if possible. Its such a handy rifle it would could easily do duty outside of deer hunting.

Does anybody make bigger mags that fit it? Is there a different stock that would let me use different style mags? I have tried to do some research myself and I am finding some options for .223 or .300 black out rifles, but haven't found anything in .450 that I know for sure works with my rifle. There seems to be a lot of variations made in the last few years with ranch rifles, predator rifles, etc. and I'm not real clear on what fits my rifle at this point.

I have a feeling I could buy another rifle in .223 that takes AR mags (at least before the current panic) cheaper than I could modify this but I thought it was worth looking into.

You could most likely convert to a newer stock that takes AI mags.
I'll see if the 284 case will feed ok from a .308 ai mag.

I don't think I'd bother except if you want more ammo on board, non-rotary centerfeed Ruger mags are pretty good. A friend if mine used one of my magnum magazines in his 30-06 for a while when he lost his.

This is similar to a thread I started a few days ago in regards to the AR mags.

I have a 450 RAR and I wish the “flush” fit mags fit more flush personally....

As to larger capacity mags for it, the AICS conversion may have merit but it would take a new stock, bottom metal, and magazine. Pretty significant investment for a cheapo rifle.

I have pondered buying a 350 Legend RAR to try to use some 450 BM AR mags.

The simple solution is to simply buy/build an AR in 450 Bushmaster. 5 and 7rd magazine are easy buy or make. :D

Sorry not much help.

If you can convert it to a stock that take AICS short action magazines that could probably be made to work. Might have to start with the SAUM/WSM version of the AICS magazine and squeeze the feed lips together to get proper round presentation height. That would probably be easier than starting with a 308 version of the AICS magazine and spreading feed lips. Boyds appears to offer a stock for the Ruger American and have bottom metal that can accept AICS pattern magazines.

Thanks for the input everybody. Sounds like an expensive proposition any way you look at it. Honestly, I just feel like I should have a spare mag for the rifle and when I saw the factory mags were $40 and got 1 star reviews on the ruger website I thought I'd look into other options.
I like the general idea of a short handy bolt gun like this with a decent sized detachable mag as a truck gun, but a lighter caliber would be more useful. .450 is a bit heavy for shooting the invading possums and skunks in the barn. It appears like I could buy another rifle for the same cost as upgrading. Not worth worrying about until things calm down though.

The issue with Ruger American mags is everything but the 450BM mags. Many guys, myself included, have bought the 450 BM magazines to use in 308 or 6.5CM rifles. The ones that take AI and AR mags work fine as do the single stack 450 mags. It tis the 4 shot flush fit mags for other calibers that give issues.

You can get them cheaper at Midway than Ruger

Good to know. I really couldn't see what would be problematic with the factory mag that I have other than it feeling a bit fragile, but the reviews on the ruger website were pretty terrible and people never include any details about the mag or cartridge. I will have to pick up another OEM mag one of these days.
