Ill admit, I have a soft spot for Colts of all kinds. But I really love shooting the four woodsman i have. They shoot so smooth and feel good in the palm. I really enjoy the 3rd model match target. It makes the ruger MkII Target feel like a clunky ol truck. I was with my grandpa when he bought it back around 2002 for 800 and some dollars. I have many of his firearms, but this is the only one I remember being with him when he bought it. I shoot it often.

For your perusal today is not my oldest Woodsman, but old enough at 90 years young. A 1930 model, with original box and paperwork, including test target. The box is taped up and barely hanging on, on the outside, but the inside is still pretty darn good. Any box is better than no box at all!

No i dont store the pistol in the box, but the box is stored in my safe with dehumidifier.

I have two 3rd Model Woodman Target Sports. My dad bought one in the 70's and I always liked it. Found one at a gun show and bought it. I've enjoyed shooting it for the last 18 years or so. My dad passed away several years ago now and I inherited his pistol which is in like new condition as dad didn't shoot his much so now I have 2 of them.

Like you I love Colts. Their quality of manufacture in fit and finish make then wonderful shooters as well as good lookers.

This is a picture of the Woodsman I inherited from my dad.

Very nice looking Woodsmen (Woodsman's?) on here!

A Woodsman is on my short-list, but I feel as though I'm star-crossed on finding a good one. Year's ago one of my local shops had a nice looking 4.5" not-Woodsman (Challenger I think it was), that turned out to have an inch of rotten barrel from the muzzle back. Major bummer. Then recently, a nice First Series Woodsman Sport crossed my path, while I had actual cash money in my pocket. Unfortunately it had a set of long, plastic grips on it, and even though the grips had proper Colt logos on them, I passed on it because I knew I wouldn't be happy unless I had one with the correct grips on it. So I bought a new-to-me road bicycle and the hunt for a Colt continues.

Also, where are pictures of your oldest Woodsman @BigBlue 94 ? :)

If there's one thing Colt knows how to do well, it's to design and make really pretty guns. I must confess though, that mine is not my best .22 LR semi-auto shooter in any other comparison.

Third model 6" Match Target was my first handgun purchase, (1968), and one of my best. Beautiful pistol for only $75. I love that gun. Hard to beat quality and reliability.

Always liked in Raymond Chandler stories, the Colt woodman being used was the sign the experienced gunman killer.. OSS used them early in WW II. Then changed them out for the fancy High Standard..

I prefer the term Woodsmen lol

Ask and thou shalt receive!

First up is the 1930 again. Notice the "The Woodsman" stamping at the base of the barrel. And the thicker pencil barrel.

Then a Pre-Woodsman from 1920. Notice the lack of "Woodsman" anywhere on the pistol. And the pencil barrel.

Then a pair of 1950 third models with tennite grips. A sport model and the Match Target.

I have not seen many fixed sight 3rd or 4th Generation Sports. One was being cut for a Micro sight by a friend. He was good with a file and it came out neat, but it sure was slow.

That screw on arch does not feel at all like an arched mainspring housing on a G.M.

I like the 3rd Generation's button magazine catch, but not its magazine disconnect.
There seems to be a straight trigger fad now, 60 years after that gun's.

Mine is a 4th.

I like the screw on arch. It is less of a grip surface, and more of an alignment tool. Not sure how beneficial it is, but its been on there for 70 years so its staying lol! Fits my mitts great.
