Savage 340

I think the Hornady 125 grain is short enough. Lee makes a mold for a 170 grain, gas-check bullet for the .30WCF, and they feed through my lever guns just fine, should feed in the 340. I've owned two 340's, I liked them but traded them off. Had fun with them. My favorite cast bullet load for the .30WCF is the LEE 170 grain GC, and 20 grains of RL-7. I stick to standard velocity loads with jacketed bullets, I've found that .30-30 rifles do not like hot loads, be they levers, bolts, or single shots.

You are correct. I am wrong. It came up on search for Williams FP-340 and I didn’t then examine it. My bad. Good catch on your part.

Sorry...

I will correct post above.

You tried doc and for that I thank you.
Planning on getting the 170gn lee mould when I can find it in stock again. I’d settle for the 150 but I like the heavier weights for cast bullets.

No problem, stuff happens. I find things on ebay alot that claim to be for something when it isn't. This could be one of those instances.

Starting to get an order together to casting for the 340.
I slugged the barrel and it measured out at .3085 so I was thinking that sizing to .310 should work.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Trying to wait for the lee 150gn or 170gn moulds to come back in stock at midway but I get impatient sometimes .
Anyone ever try the lee 115gn Fp? I think that may be designed for the 30carbine as I don’t see a crimp groove on it.
Thanks

.310” is the right size for mine. I would hold out for a 170 grs mould and, if impatient, see if any cast are available from the usual suspects.

I use 0.311” in my .30’s. Even .30/30.
I’ve used both the Lee 120gr RNGC and 113FNGC in my .30/30.
As I type this, I have about 120rds in a large Folgers coffee can, loaded in the basement. They’re loaded with 7.5gr of GreenDot. Chrono about 1,350fps.
My M1894 Win AE XTR w/Williams 5D receiver sight is sighted +2”at 50yds. Shoots 1”groups.

I’ve used 30.0gr of RL15 under the 120gr RN for 2,200fps.
I crimp lightly into the bearing surface like the .30carbine. But, I have crimped into the forward edge of the forward lube groove.
My Marlin/Glenfield M30 w/Microgroove bbl loves both at .311”.
My favorite however is the Lee 150gr FNGC. My old 1970’s vintage Single cavity mold casts to 160gr. Has thinner lube grooves. I gave it to my older brother in the early ‘80’s. It’s been to Alaska, Maine, Montana, New Mexico and Florida. Bullets cast from it have taken Mule deer, white-tails, Moose!, snowshoe hares, cottontails, jack rabbits, ground squirrels, tree squirrels, grouse, even an upstate NY black bear. Mostly over 7-10gr of Unique, otherwise 28.0gr of IMR3031. Either unsized w/tumble lube (unique loads), or Sized and gas checked and sized to .309” with an old hand push-thru Lee sizer.

I now again hold it. But, I bought a newer 2-cavity version l like better. It has slightly wider lube grooves and cast to 158gr w/Hornady crimp on gas checks. It’s really the only bullet you NEED for a .30/30.
I have a 170gr version. I don’t like it as much as the nose is long enough that when crimped to the lube groove it causes some drag cycling through my l/a .30/30’s.
I do strongly recommend you get a Lee factory crimp die. Crimp after seating for best accuracy.

Forgot to mention I had a Savage M340 back in the early’80’s. It shot really well with cast bullets!

I have one of these i recently put a Williams fp340 peep sight on. I need a taller front sight any suggestions?
Numrich has one listed but its out stock.

Maybe try eBay?
Where did you get your peep sight from? I really want one

Does anyone have an opinion on which peep sight to get. I’ve got a lead on the Williams fp-340 or the WCF co. Peep

I can only speak to the Williams, which is my go to apperture and what I have on my 340. If I recall correctly, I had to change the front sight on my 340 30-30 for a higher one. As I recall, the front sight was too low at the lowest practical aperture setting so was shooting high under 100 yards. Luckily, I had a taller sight on my 340B in 222. Traded them (the 222 is scoped) and all good.

I'd go the Williams, I believe the wcf is the no 175 think they were sheet metal.

I'm still figuring what to use on mine with the new 7-30 waters barrel.
Where did you get ahold of the barrel? I’ve heard people talking about making the swap from 30-30 but I’ve never seen it myself

Should be ordering one from Shaw soon, loowulf is getting a few barrels and I'll have them do a 340 barrel. I've seen lots of talk guys would love one in 7-30 but haven't seen one yet, only thing I see that needs to be done is modify the mag a touch. Stuck with a short col so mostly have to use fn 7mms but 120 and lighter pointed bullets should work fine. Hornady has the new ftx 120 7mm now as well.

Please make sure to give us a report on that project. Very cool.
I'd I can find the money I may restock it, the original is just fine tho has a hairline crack in the mag area which seem common on these. Richard's micro fits list they make 96% inletted stocks.

I need to find a scope mount that's lower to, the b-squared is to high for my liking, it allows you to still use the sights, but don't think I'm putting sights on the new barrel. I hope to have the same contour done so the gun could be switched back quickly.

The only other mount ive come across was the weaver mount but I’m not sure how the height differs. Prehaps you could find someone to make a custom mount or modify the b square.

I’m enjoying having mine. I may be fortunate in the fact that I like these older “budget friendly” type rifles. I had to use quotes there when you start spending 1/3 the cost of the rifle for a new rear sight. Or when you get the itch to start swapping out barrels like Mr. Fairweather’s conversation he had planned. All in good fun. Wish I could get out and do more load testing with mine. Been too busy with hunting. Life is hard sometimes lol.

It really does not make much sense to swap barrels financially, but I don't have much in the gun, I'm hoping the barrel will be less the $150. Plus it's nothing that cant be undone, I could sell the 30-30 barrel to recoup some money but I'd rather keep it. It is tempting to run a 30-30AI reamer in it, but I'll hold off on that.

If you could get the barrel at that price I feel like you could get the majority of your money back should you decide to sell it.it would be a Pretty unique setup.
