I have a coworker who wants to sell what I think is a savage model 340 in 30-30. I'm wondering if anyone here has one of these rifles, knows a ballpark figure on what they are worth, and what they think of the rifle.

they are fairly old guns... the 30-30 version was pretty popular because you could use spitzer bullets in them to try and maximize 30-30 performance (which is an oxymoron, but i digress).

they are solid rifles, and will work for ya. but, because the top of the receiver slides open w/ the bolt, scoping them is difficult at best.

top prices on them retail in the $250 range.

this rifle is most at home w/ someone who handloads and likes iron sights.

given the rifle's open-top design, they are surprisingly accurate.

good luck.

I've seen a couple in pawnshops around DFW for about $175-225.

As dakotasin mentioned, the scope mount is kind of weird; it attaches to the left side of the receiver.

They tend to make handy little carbines, though, and seem to have a pretty good following.

I passed on one for 100 last year as I could not justify the purchase since I have a Win 94 already that does not get shot much due to ammo costs and similarities to 7.62x39 which is 1/4 of the price per box. I have limited safe space for long guns too and I am primarily a handgunner. However the idea of a 30/30 bolt gun does seem a little neat and if the price is right I would buy it in your case.

There is a version in 223 rem too I think and I would have bought that for sure.
