I have sort of a bad habit. When I come across a design I really like whether it be guns or knives, I want to be able to hold onto that design into the future and wouldn't mind having a new one for later in life. Earlier this year I bought a duplicate of a $260 knife I reeeeeeaaaaallllllyyyyy work well with. I oiled it, put it back in the box, locked it away, and plan to pull it out of the box when I retire one day.

Well now a carbon fiber version of an all Ti nice production knife I already own and love has become available to me. The one I have is only coming up on a year old and it does get frequent light duty usage. But it's a 20CV blade so it's still nice and sharp, and since I carry a variety of knives, that particular one only gets carried once or twice a week. Point being, I could resell it LNIB despite regular usage. However I know I want to keep it and have always found myself thinking it'd be nice to have a carbon fiber version.

Starting bid is $250 and it's listed as new. Given that the one I own will likely be treated lightly and kept in excellent shape, and as a result last me the rest of my life, am I just being an idiot picking up a duplicate for the future even though it is a different variant?

Do you buy duplicates? I mean I'm not going to worry about usage wear and tear and character. They're my knives. Maybe this is just silly.

Thoughts?

I lost and then found my Dozier Design Kabar folder. While it was missing I bought five of them. Two for me and three to give away to friends. Does that answer your question?

Aquire with intent to use. Otherwise you are building up a collection of “shtuff for the kids to fool with” along with a few items “for the kids to fight over”. If you intend to use it all then you can’t die until you have used it all up. Buy a bunch.

Yep, especially Spyderco and ZT knives. Also because sometimes family members take a liking to one of my knives, so I can give one away and still have (at least) one left ...

Be careful about putting knives back in the box and away. Long term storage usually calls for a different approach to avoid rust and tarnish. I've helped a lot of estates and it is sad to find a great "NIB" knife rusted in the box.

Roger. I’ll do some research on appropriate storage.

No kids. Just a niece and nephew.

Not having kids this late. No wife either.

I see no issues. You're bordering on being a collector, but have a use for it - and 1 isn't much of a collection, but - you have to start somewhere ... lol

I’ve bough 9 knives this year. Spent like $1700 I think.

I do on some of the Swiss knives or the buck knives 110, I think I have 3 of those. Have them in the cars and truck just never know when you will need one or the other.

I have on occasion. I have backup copies of both the Buck Prince and Squire because I always liked them. Also the SOG mini-Micron, have a couple of those as well.

This specifically doesn't count the Moraknivs that I often buy at the gun show because why not?

I am on my third Benchmade mini grip. First I gave away, second got taken by the NY City Police, instead of fighting, I told him he could have it as a gift from me for his service, and the third is carried around every day. Wasn't his fault, I was going through a security check to gain admittance somewhere. No knives allow, I know stupid but he didn't make the rule.

I have five different Natives, but they're different steels, handle materials, etc.

I' also have the last 25 serrated ARKs Spyderco made.

Sounds like this is a fairly unambiguous "yes" answer so far. simple enough. I worked a bit of overtime this week and COVID has travel plans cancelled. Maybe I'll place a bid and just ignore it until it's over.

I buy a dup because I've been burned before when a manufacturer stops making a knife I like.

When I went to buy a second non-serrated Nirk Novo, they were out of stock everywhere. So now if I really like a knife, I purchase a second one.

I have an unfortunate propensity for buying a knife, then concluding that I like it too much to bung it up on EDC. So I find another knife that looks like a good practical solution, and find that it's too nice to use. I finally have a wretched looking CRKT squid that I think will be ugly and cheap enough to use up. Then they'll make a D2 version for $1.25 more, and the cycle will repeat.

Not specifically knives though using tools I have duplicates. May not be the identical model though. I got the knife bug in '89 and it was a fun run. One of life phases we go through as my mentors relayed similar. Nice to see the passion among people that use and collect them, this keeps the knife world rolling along.

Worse than that, I get one nice example for the collection and and several clones (which can be less expensive versions) which are for using if I intend to use the item. Guns, Knives, everything.
