Doug Ritter initially designed this knife for Benchmade, which now makes it as the Freek, but Ritter moved on to Hogue, and with the expiration of the patent on the AXIS lock, Hogue is actually making a better version than Benchmade.

I have no dog in this fight other than I just bought one, but folks, if you're going to have one medium-price, do-it-all folding knife, a Ritter RSK2 has got to be in the running, and Knifeworks is now doing a sprint run available in CPM Magnacut at RC63-64 with textured carbon fiber handles at $209.95 delivered, and that's just one hell of a good deal. Big steel, handle, and clip upgrades over the Benchmade version and Hogue has been making a fine knife lately.

My RSK2 with standard handle and CPM 20V blade steel is outstanding. Everything works on this design, and Magnacut should be icing on the cake. I hate spending more than $50-80 for a knife, but I may have to get one of these because it does so many things right, including support of Knife Rights.

Awesome deal on those materials. No surprise it was out of stock as quick as it dropped!

I like a lot about the BM Freek, but not the handles. At one time they offered the Freek with upgraded handle material, but IIRC the cost was higher than this Hogue. When those become available again, I may get one. The problem is that I already have too many knives.

My Grandson got a Hogue/Ritter with his name engraved on the blade for Christmas this last year. It's become a tradition to give the grandsons a good knife for Christmas the year they turn 16. The Hogue took the place of the BM's that were standard prior to it coming out. I got it out of the box and gave it a good look over. Liked it a lot and so does he.

Fully recommended. And as hso might agree, Ritter does a lot for knife rights and deserves everyone's support.

It would depend on your needs and/or interest in trying out a brand new steel.

20CV will have better edge retention and Magnacut will have better toughness. Corrosion resistance is very high on 20CV and a bit higher yet on Magnacut.

They are both fine steels for ordinary pocket knife use, with Magnacut pulling ahead for harder use.

20 CV is a pretty good knife steel. I get that Magnacut is better. I'm just not sure $50 better. That's 1/3 of a tank of gas. :( Literally, my truck has a 36 gallon tank.

deserves everyone's support.

Very much so! Without Doug Ritter a lot of knife owners would be languishing with repressive knife laws restricting what they could own and carry (and lets not forget that Knife Right beat NYC/NYS to stop The City from falsely charging thousands of average folks with carrying a gravity knife).
