Just checking to see what you guys are getting for velocity in 158 XTP handloads since the Hornady book's velocities were done with an 8" barrel. It says 1200 FPS with and 8" barrel is max with 14.3 grains of 2400.

With 13.5 grains of 2400 my 4" S&W 686 averages1175 FPS. Some went over the 1200FPS mark. I figured Id better stop there if I was getting near max velocity for an 8" with a 4".

I haven't used 2400 but did use Accurate #9 and got 1364fps compared to the published 1367

April -2015 @ 72 Degrees 26% RH

Hornady 158 Gr XTP
14.5 Grs 2400
WSP Primer
1.577 OAL
Medium Roll crimp

6" Colt Trooper Mk III

Avg 1195 FPS Powder Back, 1196 Powder Forward, & 1202 FPS Powder Level

Same everything but with an X-Treme 158 Gr SWC @ 1.560 OAL and a Heavy Taper crimp gave 1178 FPS PB, 1194 PF, & 1207 PL

I want to ask a question, not to hijack thread. If the load book uses a 8" barrel in this case and max charge is 14.3, would it be safe to use that powder charge with a 4 or 6 inch barrel? Why would they use an 8" barrel anyway? Thanks

Yes, that load would be fine in a shorter barrel. They use whatever barrel length is typical for a round or what they have around come test time.

OP- check your item # as they make several different XTP's for different velocities. I learned this recently so want to save others some grief if posibble.

Not to say your wrong, but I just looked at Hornady's website and it showed 2 different 158gr XTP one was a FP XTP. I saw nothing noting velocity recommendations. Where did you find this info for velocity? Thanks

It was on a slip of paper in an older box of XTP's, had velocity for each item number listed. I don't have it available now though. Will try to find it tomorrow and post it.

You're right, seems several of them are no longer made per their webpage.

Since I shoot them out of a lever action as well I went with the XTP-FP #35780. It says right on the box 700-1500 FPS... Interestingly the Hornady #9 Manual I have lists the same bullet (#35780) as good for 1150-1850 FPS
Things that make you go hmmmmmm??? Guess out of the revo I aim for shoulders, out of the rifle at near 1700 FPS I go for heart/lung when close. Lol. Im sure Im over thinking it.

Lyman 50th has the 158gr XTP with 14.9gr 2400 as max. From a 4.2" GP100 I get 1252fps as an average. SD and ES aren't terribly tight though.

14.5gr may be a little more accurate, from the limited testing I did.

My ES/SD numbers for the load I posted above weren't very good either, but they shoot great 100 yards and in.
