...and a pewter nose cap? Was there such a thing? I know there was a big bore mountain rifle that meets that description, but the guy selling this rifle got all pissed at me for calling his a CVA Mountain Rifle. LOL. Hell I could be wrong... Good price though!!

It looks similar to the Lyman/ Interarms 'Plains' rifle. Not the Great Plains. Most of the 'Plains' rifles only had 1 barrel wedge. Great price!
Hang on... Is that a 3rd hole on the forestock from a previous wedge???

I think it's a custom gun, or a modified production gun. Look closely at the patchbox, it's the wilted lily design found on some H E Leman trade rifles. Can't tell from the photos if it has 3 wedge escutions , pardon my spelling, or some kind of inlay between the wedges. Either way I would jump on it for that price.

I’d call it a three legged dog if it makes him happy... at least until he sold it to me. Those are nice rifles.

BTW, that’s darn near theft buying the gun for 150...

I thought the same thing, but he's a two hour drive away, and I need another sidelock like I need another hole in my head. Maybe if it was a flinter.... And a T/C sidelock for $150 is a steal also!

early model 77-78 cva mountain rifle kit gun. They were the only models made with that 4 screw patch box. Poorly put together as well. The trigger guard isnt even installed into the inletting.

Unlikely Mountain Rifle CVAs are showing up. Two days ago I bought one. I think it's a early and not so well done kit gun. It does say CVA and made in USA Not Spain on the barrel but no mountain rifle. It has the two wedges and four screw patchbox. There are a number of things wrong with gun but it's easily saveable . There is a problem with the set triggers. The browning is poor and a number of nicks in the barrel. some rust pits in the bore too. Not bad had lots worse before. I will get the triggers working. I think re brown it too. It needs to get warm here before I can shoot it anyway. Can you re brown over the old or do you have to remove the old brown first?

I think it depends on how much new coverage and color match that you want to have.
Not all browning is the same to begin with.
Here's a few threads that describe how to touch up small spots and how to refinish browning over a larger area such as a barrel flat.
If touching up doesn't turn out well then you can refinish the whole barrel.
What kind of brown do you think it has, plum brown or a traditional rust brown?

That was interesting to read. The brown looks to be a plain brown. I have use Birchwood Casey Plum Brown. It is much darker than this barrel .I have used the Wakon stuff and it's very dark too. I just got the LMF browning stuff. Not yet used for anything. I have a bare patch on the barrel underside hidden by the stock. I will experiment on that. Has anybody else discovered that the BC plum brown can produce a shinny black . It's as black as any hot tank treatment. . Just heat the metal so the stuff sizzles.Let it cool and rub with fine steel wool. Do that again maybe twice more. Almost as fast as a cold blue but much more durable. No stink too.
A couple of details left out . It's a 50. Has the orginal ram rod. The end that goes into the stock is aluminum. It's shaped exactly like other CVA ramrods I have. Never seen the like. Came with a jag made with aluminum too.

If you have a way to heat a water tank to boiling that the barrel will fit into you can get a good durable black oxide finish as well.
