For many years I kept an eye out for a SS 2.75in Speed Six, gave up a decade ago and purchased a 3in GP100, love the GP.

Bobbed the hammer, added compact grips....great, handy 357.

Recently I found a great Six...
Bobbed the hammer, added a Mepro night sight, compact Pachs....great 357.

Love them (and keeping both) just curious of opinions of these similar revolvers.

I have a 2 3/4 blue Security Six and a 4" SS Security Six (200th year). The shorty goes with me 10 times to one. It has taken two whitetails and a few groundhogs. 4" has punched lots of holes in paper.

IMG_0861.JPG OP, nice pair of revolvers. I was considering a 3" WC GP100 357 but I already had a 4.2" GP100 that I could carry IWB. I didn't think one inch smaller would make enough difference to justify buying it so I passed on the 3" GP. Then I saw a rare NYCPD DAO 3" Speed Six SS 38spl which I bought. I liked it enough to buy the 2 3/4" 357 version Speed Six like yours. Both are great guns. Both wear the Pachmayr Compacts and both are DAOs like yours. The 38 spl is factory DAO and I found a spare hammer to bob for the 357. I've never handled a 3" GP yet.

Loved all my Six series of guns, especially the Security Six and the Speed Six! Not so fond of the GP100; it didn't have the same handling and balance of the Six series revolvers and the trigger was heavier. If it's a short barrel .357 revolver make mine a Speed Six!

My opinion of these similar revolvers? In two words: Most favorable!

As I understand it, the DA Sixes were costing Ruger too much to manufacture, so the simplified GP100 was developed. The cost of this simplicity, in seems, is more bulk. Because the original-pattern GP100 factory grip is such a superb fit, in my hands, and mitigates Magnum recoil, I reckon that the newer revolver is “worth it,” in my case. Others’ experiences and optinions may vary.

I have two Speed Sixes, 4” and 2.75”, acquired in that order, about a number of years apart. No sane amount of money could persuade me to part with either one. The 4” Speed Six wears a Pachmayr Compact Professional grip, and the shorter one has the Ruger factory wood.

My several GP100 revolvers have barrel lengths from 3” to 6”. My first is visible in my avatar; an early Nineties with a full lug and adjustable sights. I used to to fire a necessary defensive shot, in 1993. (Necessary, because somebody was about to be seriously injured.) Sorry about the seemingly unremarkable avatar photo, but I wanted to show how I hold quite very high on a revolver’s grip, to mitigate recoil and muzzle flip, on another forum. When I decided to experiment with adding an avatar image, here on THR, I saw this image, in my iPad’s saved favorites, and thought, well, this is my most-favored firearm, in the world, so, why not?

The Speed Six is a bit more concealable, and the GP100 is kinder to my hand, if I fire Magnums. These are both wonderful weapons. Life is good.

For a while, I used these Hogue wood grips on my 3” GP. But, they don’t really fit my hand properly. I’d have to break out the dremel with a sanding drum and some sandpaper to get them right for me. This revolver came with the large Hogue rubber grip. I replaced those with the small Lett grips with the black inserts, shown in the previous pic I posted.
I was shooting Winchester 145gn Silvertip with the wood Hogues installed, and they were a little thick in the web of my hand, beating it up. I’m not recoil sensitive...I liked shooting full power Magnum ammo in the 2.5” Model 19 I used to own, and that had small Magna grips with Tyler T grip. On the GP, I went back to the compact rubber Letts, which give me no problem at all. As for these wood Hogue’s, I’ll probably make a project out of them. I’ve done some wood work before.
This revolver really likes that American Eagle 158gn JSP.... 8959DCF9-FC60-428B-AF14-C9EEB78C7F28.jpeg
