NICS delays

Some years ago when I hit BGC #51, #52, and #53 all three of them were delayed all entered within a 3 month period. Then never a delay again for many many more purchased than that. I always give my full name including spelled middle and SSN. Who knows what they are doing.

South Dakota regular concealed carry permit carriers were just cleared this week to bypass NICS. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/o...-regular-concealed-carry-permit-nics/download

Good on your legislators. They set the requirements for concealed carry and purchase. At least somebody has some common sense. In WA the CC permits and $5 will buy you a latte at Starbucks. They don't want it to be easy. They want a BC for every firearm. I could walk into my LGS with a legally concealed pistol (I've done that) and I still need the state BC to buy a pistol. That can take 10 days. They have an air tight lock on that one.

One of the secondary benefits of my CC permit here in Kansas is instant approval. When I get out my CC permit, the clerk always says, "Great. That makes it much easier."
That's the way it is here. Some of the larger stores (like Cabela's/Bass Pro) make a copy of your CCW License and staple it to the rest of the paperwork though. The convenience of not waiting for background checks when buying guns is one of reasons my wife and I maintain our CCW Licenses - even though Idaho has gone constitutional carry for the most part.

I get delayed all the time buying long guns, but pistols, I can walk out with the same day.
I asked my FFL why I always get delayed, and he says because of my common name. I do know their is a guy around here, with same exact name as mine that is a fellon, that sameness has been dogging me for credit checks for auto, and house buying also.

I have a pretty common name as well, but it hasn't affected me in the past. My recent delays seem to be related to the increase in volume of purchasers.

Delay notwithstanding, my FFL can release it today so I'll be picking it up this afternoon

You folks with speedy approvals are lucky.
I've had some one hour delays in OH, but I had to leave the LGS yesterday due up a longer delay.
Absolutely ridiculous.
I purchased online from RK guns (Rural King), so I already paid for the Ruger Max 9.
I appreciate the knowledge in this thread.

My delays are always 2 hours at least. I notice that if the LGS closes within 3 hours, they ALWAYS seem to approve it AFTER the store closes forcing me to make another 45-60 min drive to and from the next day.

Sitting here in NE Ohio, Cleveland and never have had a delay. That includes a local shop as well as Cabela's. Beats me why some are a 5 min call and others are delayed but would guess there can be any of several reasons.

I haven't bought anything since the beginning of the year but have bought quite a few last year. I have to use a UPIN since I was victim of identity theft. Normally it would take 5-15 minutes for my BG check to go through before 2020. Since the beginning of 2020 I was delayed once and it was only for about 1 1/2 hours. Normally in the pst year and a half, the FFL has a proceed on the E Check before I can finish filling out the paper form.

And yes a lot of people get the 3 day waiting period mixed up. As dogtown tom said, it is 3 business days excluding weekends and holidays.

I got approved this afternoon.
From what I read here, Monday was the first business day after Friday, so maybe the NICS Toadies were overworked yesterday morning.

NJ same day NICS approval last week. About 6 hours till I got the phone call. 6 months ago it took 5 days.

I'm a small time FFL and I've noticed an increase in delays over the last several months. It's all volume related. With the gun and ammo surge they just can't keep up and hence you get delays. Nothing specific to your purchase, just that it happened when there was a good amount of transactions being processed at the same time. If they had a problem with you it would be declined and not just delayed.

Came to post this. Sales are record breaking month after month, year after year now. All the folks who never considered buying a firearm see how things are going in America lately and it's added a significant quantity of additional purchasers. Online it's also added a large number of new posters who are bereft of any previous working knowledge of firearms. In the '60s 1 in 10 was a wartime veteran, and family gatherings had them discussing things matter of fact. Now, it's 1 in 100 and with social media etc creating a negative image of servicemen they are alone and often don't even show up.

With that going on, NICS is adding staff as reasonably as they want, demand keeps surging, and the shelves remain bare. The next surge in buying parts etc may be when the ATF gets their Form 4999 approved to outlaw AR Pistols - and millions of owners convert them. Another surge.

In other news it's been revealed that gun owners at large are being considered part of American terrorism, as signed on by our current Administration. Any confirmation of that by alphabet agencies will only add fuel to the fire.

When I purchased the S&W Governor at another LGS here in Central Ohio, the sales rep asked if in addition to my DL I also had a concealed handgun license (which I do), he took both and I was out the door in under 10 minutes. That was a first for me.

Last two checks, both in the past few months were less than 10 minutes to clear. One before that cleared before I finished paying for the gun.

Mine was ran and done in under 5 minutes yesterday. It only took the amount of time for the clerk to give my info off of the 4473 and being given a proceed.

I will buy ammo at Academy, but never a gun.

They do not honor the "3 business days" model; they do not release the gun until they get a "proceed".
An increasing number of chain and big box shops are adopting that policy.
I would bet if you get sued enough times your lawyers will tell you to do the same.
