Well, despite it being a weird time to do it what with the end of the world going on and everything, but lately I've been rejiggering my collection a bit. Sold off my tricked out CZ Scorpion and have a couple of other guns listed. My collection/arsenal has been stagnant for a long time. That is to say, my needs and my philosophy has evolved a bit over time. The Scorpion is awesome for what it is, but after tuning it and tweaking it over the years I've never really decided if it's a serious weapon or a range toy. Sure, it's military grade in construction...but back when I got it I didn't have much for rifles. But nowadays I find myself preferring a 5.56 carbine over a 9mm PCC.

The next thing is my shotgun. I have a Mossberg 500 nickel/marine-coat which has served me well. I upgraded it a bit with a Streamlight TL-Racker WML forend, a good sling and an ESSTAC shotshell card. Overall I like the gun. But I'm not really much of a hunter anymore. Even when I was, in my formative (and poor) years I did all my wingshooting with a break-open 20ga Stevens single shot. I used my dad's 870 occasionally but didn't have one of my own til I was 40! So I really never built that muscle memory that most other farm/rural kids did.

Obviously when/if ammo returns to stores I could get few hundred rounds of low brass and work it a bit. But more and more I'm yearning for a Beretta 1301 Tactical. I'm not going to wingshoot with my shotgun. I mostly carry mine in the backwoods and mountains of Montana to ward off Grizzlies, and to have as a home defense option. I've seen a lot of videos, read a lot of reviews, and the gun seems like a rock solid fighting shotgun.

So, aside from price, is there any good reason not to sell my Mossy and get the Beretta? It's not a cheap gun so I just want to see if there's any known "gotchas" that I'm missing. Help talk me into or out of one!:neener:

Can't really find any fault with your reasoning as I have lately been having the same thoughts along similar lines myself. Haven't been hunting for a number of years now and have converted several of my hunting shotguns into a home defense role with shorter barrels and a few other accessories. If I was looking for a quality semi-auto shotgun I would be considering something like the Beretta 1301 Tactical or the Benelli M4 Tactical. Both are proven designs and are a couple of the best built tactical shotguns on the market today.

Nothing wrong with choosing the 1301 if that is your preference. They work well. In the end it just matters that you are happy with your choice of the tool. The bear or perp won't care what model delivered the pain. Good luck :)

While I can't argue against buying the Beretta - I would caution against doing so if it necessitates selling the Mossberg as you state.

If you're to restrict yourself to a single gun of that general category - I'd say the already-owned Mossberg is the long-term favorite.

I can't imagine ever not being able to; repair, upgrade or modify the Mossberg but can easily see a time when the Beretta is no longer supported by either the factory or the aftermarket.

Otherwise, look at what you'll really possibly get for the Mossberg against the cost of the Beretta and perhaps having two will sound good to you.

Todd.

@Phaedrus/69 your post has me looking at the available tactical/defense shotguns. I had a 500 a few years back. It was not getting shot very often so I traded it off on something I wanted more. My current SHF shotgun is a cheap little single barrel Nomad.

It folds in half and fits into a backpack.
I wish Beretta or Benelli made a left handed semiautomatic tactical model.

Well, looks like the die is cast! I talked to a guy today that wants the Mossy and I'm going to deliver it him tomorrow. So now I will buy the 1301 or be without a shotgun!:D Even though I don't use a shotgun all that much I don't want to be without one for long. Briefly I considered buying a Rossi R92 in .44 Mag to replace the shotgun and it would for camp/bear use, but ultimately I hate to lose the versatility of a 12ga.

I have a Mossberg 590 tactical that I really like but I have also been contemplating adding a semi auto tactical shotgun to my collection. That Beretta 1301 is definitely one to consider. Let us know how you like it.

I love my 1301! Head over to Pistol Forum for a 400 page thread with just about anything you want to know about the 1301.

Not to be an enabler, but these guys make some great stuff for the 1301:

I have the CROM and the Magpul stock adaptor for my 1301.

For a light I use the simple yet effective Streamlight 870 mount.

And because post are useless without pics....

Though I'd replied to this one! Yeah, I've had the Aridus Industries site bookmarked for a year but right now they're out of stock on all their 1301 goodies. When stuff is available again the first thing I'll get is the adapter to run a Magpul SGA stock on it. Maybe get the CROM down the road. I suppose I might get everything eventually but I got a Steiner MK7 light from a fellow at BerettaForums, and if the soon-to-be-released light & sling mount from GG&G turns out to be as good as their other products I might just stop there. 5 + 1 is fine for me, and while more is better I want to stay above boards with 922r, so I'd have to get the forend as well.

I have and have owned several tactical auto-loaders from premium makers. In my opinion, the 1301 is the best of the bunch. It is the lightest, yet softest recoiling of them....Mossberg, Benelli, Beretta.
