I finally got all moved in here in Missouri, and had $1400.00 that was burning a hole in my bank account, so I did what any red blooded American would do, I went and bought the side loading gate Henry in the .44Magnum Carbine with the over sized lever.

After much searching, on the internet, I finally found one that was only $20.00 over retail, and the fact I have plenty of .44 Magnum, as well as .44 Spcl. I figured what the heck, go for it. so I did. Should have it in my hands by the end of this week, so I'll have some photo's of it.

From what I've heard it is a sweet, smooth, and quite a good looking firearm in the blued finish. Incidentally I do have it's brother in the the .357/.38 version that is brass, that looks extremely snazzy, but this I plan on doing some whitetail hunting on my son's property a little later this year. The farthest shot would be a little over 50 yards. BTW the .357/.38 has one of the smoothest lever actions I've ever experienced as well as the trigger pull, I'm hoping the .44Mag will also have those characteristics.

So what is your opinion of my choice of money well spent, IMHO.

My Henry steel .44 Mag can hold its own against the Marlins and Winchesters in the safe. Don’t have the side gate which is nice to top off the Mag with but really like the ease of unloading the Henry compared to the other levers. Congrats!

One other thing...you’re going to love carrying it around the farm/ranch/woods compared to that brass .357. The difference in weight is immediately noticeable.....

I haven’t chrono’d any stout loads through the Henry but in. Ruger M77/44 Mag I was getting an average of around 1950 FOS with a 180 grain XTP and #7.

With a 200 grain XTP and #9 I was averaging 1930 FPS

In a Ruger Deerfield I was able to easily get an average of 1828 FPS with a 240 XTP and 296.

Those are all 18.5 inch barrels I think so the Henry should be close to those numbers.

Henry makes exceptional rifles, you'll find some folks who say otherwise but I own Marlins and winchesters too and the only lever action I have that better than the one Henry I own is a 1957 made marlin 39a. It's nearly impossible to beat a good 39a though.

Congrats on the new toy.

I also have old Marlins that I love.

I bought my first Henry (H010X) awhile ago. 45-70 Gov't, oversized Loop....

It has been great. I run it with a suppressor.
I load for it. I haven't bought factory rounds.

It did great with the Hornady FTX. I then loaded some 405/gr coated lead.
It really really really likes those!!!

I hope you have a lot of success with it.

I use the same rifle in 44 mag for whitetail here in Iowa, mines the carbine with the oversized lever as well although mines an earlier one without the side gate. I run a Skinner peep sight with their brass front sight and really like it. Accurate, good trigger and the action is nice. My brother has a newer Marlin in 44 and I’d say my Henry has a nicer trigger and action than his, and I’d say that even if he had the Henry and I had the Marlin.

Frulk, I also have the Ruger .44 Magnum Auto Carbine, however, mine isn't the Deerfield, it's the forerunner model, and I do believe I've gotten about the same velocity that you described, although I'd have to look it up. The only problem with that carbine it will only shoot the 240 grain projectiles with any accuracy, as I've tried the 180 grains and there wasn't enough windage on the peep (that I installed) in order to hit point of aim, and it didn't care for the 200 grain either. I haven't tried the 300 grain in it though.

Sabbfan, Quite a few years back, I had an older Marlin .44 Magnum with the micro-groove rifling and I had a heck of a time keeping 3 rounds within 6" at 50 yards regardless of the handloads I used. I finally got rid of it. However, Dredd, I bought shortly thereafter, a brand new JM Marlin in the 45-70 ( it had Ballard rifling btw) and using my casted 405 grain bullets was able to place 3 rounds in a cluster under an inch. I don't recall, off hand what powder I used, but had planned a hunt in Alaska to hunt Kodiak bear, but unfortunately it got cancelled.

film495, as soon as I get it, I'll get pictures of both the rifles together here, although I do believe I've got a picture of the brass .357 Henry posted here, and the last rifle on my log on is the lever action 45-70, also I've had that Ruger for ever and am certain I placed photo's of that here also.

Rifle came today, but can't pick it up until Monday, the FFL guy is out on vacation and won't be back until Monday. I'll get some photo's of that moricky tick when I take possession.

As promised here are the photos of the new Henry Big Boy .44Mag/.44SPL Carbine with the blued receiver. The photos really don't do the carbine justice. But I'm extremely happy with it, and once I have a chance to shoot it, I'll show ya some photos of the target. BTW so far I've only run dummy loads thru it and the action is smooth as silk, the trigger is going to need some breaking in. The wood to metal fit isn't anything to brag about, all in all I'm satisfied.

Been kicking the idea around about getting one in 44 mag. Just haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. Hmmm. That's really nice, congrats.

I like the Big Boy All Weather in the .44 Magnum but am waiting until Marlin rolls out of Arizona to see if Ruger changes the twist to 1:20 like the Henry and other .44 Magnum rifles to make my decision. But if in the meantime I come across the Henry as specified, well, I will grab it most likely.

3Crows, the all weather is a really neat rifle also, however I've always been a wood and blued metal man myself, all though I've got a Henry's Big Boy in the .357Mag/.38Spl. with the brass receiver, and a Winchester 30-30 with the brass receiver and the engraving of the North American Big Game Species, on the model 94. In fact I've also got the Savage Axis II with the Stainless steel barrel and the brown laminated stock in 30-06. Dang I just remebered I also have the SS AR-15 with the bull barrel in SS also. However the vast majority of my gun collection has the blued barrel and the wood stocks.

Increasingly I want stainless steel and I do not care if the stock is wood, plastic or composite. The Henry unfortunately is chrome, not stainless, but I think it will be okay. But, like I said, I am waiting to see what Ruger offers, supposedly as early as June, before I commit to a Henry unless one shows up and tempts me.

Can't say as I blame ya, but be advised they might be hard to get, and at a fair price at that. I do agree Ruger makes a really nice firearm, as I've got quite a few Ruger's in my collection also, and never had to get a hold of customer service, with the exception of one, which was actually my fault in trying to reassemble it after taking it down to clean it up. They were kind enough to walk me thru it: I had it jammed up extremely tight, to the point I couldn't even get the slide to budge on one of there semi-auto 9mm's.
