223/556 muzzle brake?

I have an a2 flash hider on my Ar, but my bolt action is bare. I do t Thu k that the 223 has enough recoil to "need" a brake. My rifle doesn't move off target at the shot can see the impact cloud on a steel target at 300 meters.
Thing is if you want one then install it it can't hurt.

That is a personal question
that only you can answer! I bought one for my AR, just to see if it made any difference. It made a noticeable difference, i.e. reduced recoil and muzzle rise to .22 levels, though I don't use it much...

Use the 6mm Lil Bastard. The difference in recoil reduction between a .24” bore versus a .26” bore in that brake design is nil.
Thanks for the tip. Is the same thing true for using a 30cal brake on 6.5mm? Or is that just a little too much gap?

It’ll be fine if it’s what you have. On the loose side, but not terribly outside of even standard diameter offset. If your 30 cal is a super loose 30, oversized compared to most 30’s, then maybe you’d feel a difference with a tighter spec’d 6.5 brake, but most likely, you won’t be able to feel a difference between a 6.5 brake and a 30 brake.
I have used 30 cal brakes on 6mm’s even. The spectrum of brakes available today is a new occurrence - for many years we really only had 22cal and 30 cal brakes on the market. Usually you’ll see brakes with .02-.03” clearance over designed caliber designation, but sometimes as loose as 0.05”. A 30cal brake (likely .328-.338” diameter) on a 6.5 would be ~.064” oversized, so a bit larger than “normal,” but the consequence is minimal. I’ve also used 6mm and 6.5mm brakes on 223’s. The efficiency is reduced a little, but honestly, the felt recoil reduction is typically still better when using a large multi port, highly efficient brake than it is with a caliber correct, but inefficient/less efficient brake.

I'm thinking about putting one on my next 223 barrel. Recoil is just enough to bounce me off target and I can't see my hits on Prairie Dogs. And then I start thinking about the poor guys sitting close to me!

Have the barrel threaded for $75. Far better than the clamp on brakes which run the risk of eccentricity.

Sheesh, $225 for muzzle threading is too damned much, period. Good for him if he can get it, but he ain’t getting it from me!
well it was a quote to have a barrel cut down, and rethreaded, after tax. Still higher than a new barrel, but I have very accurate 24" AR barrel sitting unused because its too heavy. I would take my chances cutting it to 20" for $80, but not enough of an issue to go pay more. I also want it turned to a lightweight, and by then, I'm way beyond new price.

The AR is a soft shooter in the recoil department but it still recoils enough that you lose your sight picture. A brake will let you see every hole appear in your target. The trade off is increased noise and feeling the pressure wave. I use one for load development and then put it away when done and re-install my 3" bloop tube. I only shoot one AR and have never felt a need for anymore. I see no difference in group size or impact point between the two devices.

Doesn't matter with irons or a red dot. But with an ACOG or scope, I always use one.
Shooting a carbine with a scope is already a pita, having the sight picture jump around just makes things twice as bad.
I have a Larue Tranquillo on one, Bravo flash comp on another. But the best of the best is the SJC Titan Extreme 2.

Same here, no way I'd put a brake on a hunting rifle. I use a Hypertap on my 3Gun rig:

Works as advertised and when combined with a low mas BCG, adjustable gas block and lightened buffer & spring, makes for a very fast gun. But the Hypertap is just about in the "double up on hearing protection" range. Last match we had to shoot prone through a blue barrel and the noise/concussion sucked. The SROs keep their distance as there's no issue picking up the shots on a timer, nobody wants to be near the thing.
My bolt .223s for hunting, don't wear brakes and my SPR and Coyote AR15s wear Griffin Armament M4SD Flash Comps, not as loud as a brake, but still some recoil reduction:
