Depends on what you're shooting. If you're shooting slugs like a rifle, then you aim. If you're shooting flying/moving targets whether clay, feathered, or others, you point
I agree with George...
Aiming to me is lining up front and rear sights on a firearm for a single projectile point of impact.
Pointing to me is quickly & properly mounting, aligning and sighting down a barrel like shotgun where one or more of the many projectiles will hit the target in some fashion. I may line up with the bird or bullseye, but all the time knowing there will be collateral damage to the bird/paper otherwise. I turn some clay targets to dust, while others I am just proud to see a chip come off and counted as a hit. Rarely do I see anyone complaining because they didn't hit a live bird in the head instead of the body etc. A dead bird is a dead bird.
Sitting at a table during a shotgun turkey shoot on a cool fall morning to win that bird... I would say I am carefully aiming Oh the smell of those paper hulls, a little pipe tobacco odor, and the ribbing from fellowship always adds to the flavor of the morning.
Semantics can be blamed for a lot of forum fodder when most already know the answers Enjoy your shotguns whatever you call it.
