I am writing this post to show that a spot fix is possible on a blued gun. I put a considerable ding on my 1965 S&W model 17. The metal was deformed. An expert refinishing shop in my state said they could sand the ding away, polish and insert the gun in a bluing tank where only the exposed metal would accept the bluing. The rest of the bluing was left alone.

The gun was in 100% condition before stupid me put a ding in it. I didn’t want the old finished stripped and this shop said they could just fix the damaged spot. Most people on the internet say it can’t be done without the gun looking blotchy or mismatched. I think they did a superb job. Let's play a game of who could find where the fix was done.

Spot bluing is possible but it's hard to get it to match perfectly.
Someone with the talent & time can do it if they are used to doing it.

Great job! There is nothing worse than putting a big scratch or ding in a pristine firearm. I’m glad they got it looking like new again

Stay safe.

I'd say getting it to blend is the key. Since boiling your gun won't damage the old finish it seems isolating your rusting to just the damaged area is the trick. Never tried this though Ive just conserved whole guns
