Working a load for .45 ACP with 230g FMJ and XTP on a short 3” barrel.

The only bulk amount powder I have is HP-38. So I’m using it. 1st time doing .45 ACP

I use the two powders interchangeably for 9mm and they are nearly the same. I don’t load 45 so I can’t help you there.

just looked at THR archives, look like 5.6 HP-38 at 1.275 is the ticket load.

THANKS!

5.6 is a little warm even by yesterdays standards, and I had issues with some mags with the 1.275 OAL, so I load the 230 to fall between 1.260/1.265 OAL.

Try @Nature Boy's 5.1 Gr load at that OAL, I bet you like it.
thanks! I just did some dummy rounds at 1.275 and it didn’t feed well in the Colt mag but worked perfect in the Wilson mag.

I’ll got down to 5.1 @ 1.260 to see how it runs

Don’t start at max, and make sure you plunk test. That’s pretty long, particularly for JHP. Obviously as you seat deeper pressures go up.
thanks man. 1.275 plunk good but some mags don’t like it at all. I’ll start below max

Picking what mag a 1911 prefers is the first thing I do with one. I keep things simple and use empty cases, if it feeds an empty case there is a much better chance it is less sensitive to the other variables like bullet profile and seating depth.

Like this.

Empty case... Who would have guess!

Those Willson Mags are great!

From Speer 11

I cut my teeth on the Speer #11... but be aware, some of that load data has changed. To wit: The max load with Unique... #11 is 6.9grn, #14 is 6.5grn. I can tell you, from experience, that 6.9grns is a little hot. It looks like the W231/HP38 data is still the same (with different velocities, so it sounds like they reworked the data...) The old #11 doesn't list COAL, either, the #14 does... so it's likely some of that data changed as a result of OAL... I'm guessing. My point is... as was mentioned... start low and work up. The .45ACP is an easy load to work up, but don't get stupid with it.

Jmorris my S&W 645 will feed empty brass no problem with my variety of factory and aftermarket MAGS. Not so with my other semautos though. Even my S&W 457 will only feed brass with a factory MAG.

Yeah the only difference between HP38 and w231 is lot to lot variance.

Don't shoot 45acp 230gr bullets loaded with speer 11 through 13 max loads in a small glock clone, it stings pretty good.

I love speer11. I look at some of those loads and I'm like what the hell were they thinking.
Their max loads I would only use in 1911 and carbine. Over 6gr of HS-6 is a known +p load, nearly 7gr of unique is also +p with a 230gr bullet.

I’m just loading for reliability and good enough accuracy. Just getting into 1911’s and it seems mags are the issues.

Pretty neat guns!
