My Wife wants a 9mm Gold Cup!

Many compact pistols are just not as fun to shoot as full sized 9mm’s are.

My wife gets what she wants, as I do. I didn’t pick her CC pistol either, I don’t know how many she shot before she decided on one but here favorite one is one I wouldn’t have picked.

We are not the same person, thank God, and both happy.

I’m not sure how many “I got my wife/kid a ____ and they don’t want to shoot.” Thread and conversations I have come across, generally from people that think everyone should like what they like but the reality is, they don’t.

I have Series 70 Gold Cups in .38 Super, .45 ACP and 9mm. Love them all. But I still love my early blue one in .45 ACP the best. Depending on what she wants to do with it, I am a big fan of the S&W Model 52 in .38 WC for target shooting as well as the .32 S&W Long WC semi autos that are out there.

Thanks guys. I think I didn't put enough info in the post. My Wife will do anything to buy me anything. On the other hand she always states she wants or needs nothing. Then when I do get her "things" she's happy grateful and adores her gifts. She's just near impossible to buy for. So, Her Dad used to win numerous events with his Colt Gold Cup. It was a .45 and that's about all I know of it. Thanks to you guys I know much more about them. While I think she would enjoy the older models, she really has a thing about anything used. The new blue on silver is something that I should have been much more attentive with her reaction to this version. It's not a money thing. Last week she bought me an accurized shadow 2 and an FN Tactical. Just because. However, I once bought here a Kimber Solo and for six years I went back and forth with Kimber until they finally gave her a $1,400 credit. I should have researched this gun more prior to purchase. Hence this thread. Do you all feel Colt's Gold Cup is not a plagued gun? Does CZ buying Colt make issues for this gun. and BTW, I wish Colt had bought CZ. Just because that make me feel "strength in America". Ignorant point of view when it comes to global economy, but for me it's always America first. Back to the gun thing, she would never buy a gun for herself. She would never buy her own jewelry or perfume. Her Christmas list is always - I don't want anything! When I mentioned another "small" gun, CC, .380, God forbid, .22, she flat out told me I'm tired of these small guns. Now trying to figure out which Gold Cup, I'm going nuts. I'd get them all but you can't find any of them. So, now what? Oh yeah, and I think stepping up to a .45 is a bit out of her comfort zone. But finding a Gold Cup in 9mm? I'll have better luck buying lotto tickets. Thanks all.

I use to take new shooters who were ready for a centerfire pistol, after first getting the hang of using a rimfire pistol, and give them a Star Model B 9mm. to try out. Everyone always did well with it as it was basically just like an all steel 1911, only slightly smaller. Felt recoil was never a problem and the gun itself was very easy to handle and control. I would think any 9mm.1911 would be a great way to go if your wife wants a full size semi-auto of her own.

Thank you sir. My Wife used to shoot competitively with her Dad before I owned my first gun. We're in our 60's and with the New & Improved arthritic hands, some of the punch of these guns hurt her clear into her shoulders. Overall I think your spot on with the idea of an 1911 or 2011 style 9mm with all that steel absorbing that shock. I'm "gun" shy about making a $2k mistake. She can be a pain in my .... Well, I try to get her to shoot say previously mentioned Shadow 2, it's some 20 lbs of gun. {BTW, I had no Idea these were such finicky eaters. I may have rethought my idea of wanting one if I know I'd have to reload 9's "just" for this gun!} But she doesn't. Funny side note, buying her something and thinking I've kept it a secrete! Never happened and probably never will. Anyone know where I can get my hands on a Colt Gold Cup in 9mm? Your my hero and I'd just love to hear from you. thx

But finding a Gold Cup in 9mm?
Since you've added the context of her Father's GC - I'd say that that firms up the Colt's model for you.

As far as issues with GCs - there was a time when it paid to watch the rear sights for them wanting to slowly disassemble themselves from firing. Some folks upgraded straight outa the box and put the originals with the box & paperwork. Minor but worth watching for.

She wants new? Colts are one of those guns that finding *new in the box* even when rather dated is still an option. So, you can find old but not used.

I wouldn't worry too much about the CZ take-over. Worth noting that in some ways, The Czech Republic is even more *America* than America. if I'm to spend my dollars on the far side of the English Channel, The Czech Republic is #1 on my list.

Noting her *comfort zone* relative to .45 is valuable and not to be ignored though starting her with modest target loads would mitigate much of the difference.

Todd.

Thanks Todd. To change my own post, I really liked STI and it was a bit of a toss up between Shadow, STI and some stuff that was two to three times the price. But we were told STI was to be no longer. Then ...? It also was bought?

I did a couple of things with my Gold Cup when I had one. First I replaced the roll pin which holds the rear sight to the slide with a cut-down portion of a drill bit. I have had that roll pin break on other Colts that I had. I also replaced the recoil spring with an old Detonics full length guide rod, dual recoil spring assembly. It has an elastomer buffer built into it which helps cut down on felt recoil and from the frame taking a constant beating. It works great on all of my other 1911s in .45 ACP too. Of course felt recoil shouldn't be a problem with a 9mm. Gold Cup.

Thanks TomJ, Who found me this amazing piece of art, sculpture, Beauty Oh yeah. and its a .45. What would you say are the pro's and con's of shooting it? BTW, our goal in life is to die broke or heavily in debt. While we are quite comfortable in our retirement and this gun, er, work of art, would not be financial strain, still, do you shoot it or not? Does shooting it ruin it in anyway? Or...? And TomJ, this was a really great gesture Colt-Govand-39-t-Silver-TALO-45-A-C-P_101554188_12059_C348177403A52B74.jpg finding all that you did. Shoot it or sell it.

I'm glad to hear it worked out. That is a beautiful gun. I've received a great deal of help from members on this forum and am happy to return the favor. I would definitely shoot it. That's what it was made for.

There are GC's in 9mm, just not on every shelf in every store. I have two stainless Gold Cups, one in .45 and another in 10mm, and frankly there are better 1911's out there. I have a stainless Springfield "Loaded Target" with a ramped barrel in 9mm that in every measurable way outclasses my Gold Cups. But since she's set on the brand name and model from sentimental reasons, keep your ear to the ground and be patient.

OP,
Your wife sounds like a wonderful woman. I did search for a new one but couldn't find one. Attached is a link to a couple of used ones, if you're interested along with the link for Guns International that came up in my search.

Hey Tom!!! Thanks! I just bought that series 70 engraved that you found for me. Without you I would have never found it nor have I found anything like it for the price. I really appreciate you and all your help with finding this for me! It's a big WOW! She had just begun to complain that most all her guns were small or girly guns. She was shooting and winning medals in her teen years. I had been buying her small 9's and .380's. Stupid me. I hope this gets me back on track with her. Sadly I don't know much about the series 70 models. If you care to share on these, well, you'd be the man I'd like to ask! Thanks buddy!

I'm happy to help. That is a beautiful gun. While I own a few 1911's, I don't know that much about the series 70 models and don't want to give you misinformation. There are others on this forum who are much more knowledgable about 1911's, and if you have questions I'm sure they'll chime in.

It depends on whether it is a real Series 70, from the 1970's era, or if it is a current Series 70.

The original Series 70 was significant because of the collet style barrel bushing. Current Series 70's are basically defined as just a 1911 without a firing pin safety.

I have Gold Cups in 9 / 38 Super and 45. Like them all. If you have a wife that likes guns and she wants a particular make and model, I would stop worrying about other's opinions and just get her what she wants. I bet it will benefit you in the long run.

Ya know Bob, you hit the ole nail head on. She longs for a gold cup as it was her Dad's favorite. For some reason she thought the Gold Cup's had a gold trigger. For the life of me, unless you put one on, they don't. So, I hope this guy above will satisfy the gold trigger need. Thx.

Sounds like you're covered then.

Get her a *Cup* and then gold-nitride the trigger.

Todd.
