The local public range is a mess.

My favorite range was the Clark County, Arkansas dump/landfill when I was in college/grad school. Lots of washers, dryer, refrigerators, cars, etc to plink at. Unattended, probably an EPA site now.

That is an example of how “uncivilized” civilized man can be.

I once belonged to a small gun club in Western Wyoming, where the 100 yard target frames consisted of treated 4”x4” in the ground, with a 4’x8’ piece of black Celotex attached.....offering a great place to staple your targets. Apparently some “dumb a$$’s” thought that placing objects on the top off or stapling the targets in front of the post was a good idea. In short order they destroyed many of the 4x4’s supporting the Celotex! Some people are too stupid to breath, if it were to require a thought process! memtb

My close friend Dan worked his butt off trying to keep the Kitsap range in WA open and running. The sight of an uncontrolled trashed place called a "range" would infuriate him. Sad he's gone but i hope the members there appreciated him.

Guaranteed those 50 gallon drums would be shot to pieces in a week. Morons will be morons.
One of the county guys here brought up some trash cans to our local range, I was amazed that they last quite a while. Im not sure If he or someone else was emptying them, but for a while the did what they were supposed to and held trash.
Gone now, but I appreciate the effort.

DLNR enforcement makes a cruise thru every day, so for the most part the real idiots go elsewhere and make a mess/do dumb stuff....Unfortunately one of the places they like to go is also one of my old favorite places to go......

My favorite spot to go shooting was a area in Hurricane, UT. It was off the highway and when I was a kid our dad used to take us there. I liked the place alot. Two years ago I decided to revisit it to go shooting. I had a Ruger Blackhawk and this caught the attention of one of the older guys. Had a nice conversation with him but he was asking if I was from around St George, then what was I doing up there in Hurricane?
I mean no offense towards the guy but I did find it a little off putting. Just can't find a good area anymore to go shooting and if the one good place is a little out of the way then I'd rather go there.

If that’s the one near the Carson out past the V&T railroad depot and city dump, I’ve shot at that range back in the late 1980’s. For an open, public range it was very nice. Too bad inconsiderate people take it upon themselves to trash places like that :(.

Stay safe.

Did you ever go to Lytle Creek?

I used to go there 30+ yrs ago and it wasn't too too bad. Still dumpy but not horrible. I used to go off roading in that area too (off roaders are just as guilty too)

I stopped for abut 5 yrs and went back and it was atrocious. I left after about 10 minutes when ricochets were flying over my head.

They turned it it a monitored range... I heard it was a lot better but/and that LEOs would walk around snooping at peoples stuff on the shooting benches etc.

Sad.

Pack it in and pack it out. Simple.

I would guess that most everyone on this blog has visited a public range, in turn, your have viewed our fellow gun owners that frequent public ranges - with that said, the condition of a public range should not be a surprise to anyone. Always remember that everything free tends to be overused.

Oh yeah, I quit going there about 1995-96 when it was still a free for all. I decided it wasn’t a good idea anymore when I drove in and saw a big batch of Bud Light fueled Fontana/Rialto hoodlums shooting pistols and AK type rifles out of their parked cars practicing their drive-by shooting skills.

it’s a paid range now, you shoot towards the right side of the canyon as you go up rather than out across the creek. It’s much more controlled and civilized than in years past.

Stay safe.

When I used to hunt in the Catskill Mts., there was a small box canyon in Hurley on private land right off a town road that everyone used to sight in for decades. It was a perfectly safe 50 yard or so range, narrow with high walls..

Eventually, the pigs arrived and started leaving trash downrange to shoot at. I figure either the owner got disgusted or the town cited him for trash, but the last time I went there they had fenced the opening, so that opportunity was lost forever.

Some of my first memories of shooting were of my dad taking me to the local dump to shoot rats with a single shot .22 rifle. This would have been about 60 years ago. No shortage of targets.
Same here, back when I was little there was a “transfer station” out a half-mile or so from town. It was a cement pad where you would drop trash and then the loaders would scoop it into trucks for the run to the landfill out in the desert north of town. They didn’t work on Sunday’s, do there was lots of prime targets for the Marlin 39A and Colt Huntsman!

That spot (near Rainbow Rd at Washington) is now practically in the center of town, Las Vegas has grown a bit since the 1970’s.

Stay safe.

Sadly, people are just nasty! :( As an Eagle Scout and a former Scout Leader I take home more trash than I bring to a place. I've been on a lot, I mean A Lot, of those County wide clean-ups!

We built a small private range on some lay-out ground on a friends farm. He lets local and County LE use it along with a few Concealed Carry instructors. It seems like if anyone has ever been there as a guest that they think they have access to it forever. I've run a lot of people off for shooting trash. The last time it was a young couple shooting bottles on the grass where we park. I was, well lets just say not very "Highroad" to them! I let the neat ones stay and finish their shooting with the reminder that they are on private property.

Its sad what we have become! :(

I used to live in Laughlin, NV and had access to a range within walking distance from my home, out in the desert BLM land. Needless to say being relatively new to the area, I went and built a shooting bench out of 2X4's and some 4X4's, and set it up 100 yards from this huge berm that had evidence of being used prior to my discovering the unsupervised range, as a back stop. It (shooting bench) stood unmolested for at least a couple of weeks, and then someone started using it as target practice, for whatever reason is beyond my comprehension. Then probably about a week later used it to make a campfire and burned it completely down. Well, after that I purchased a portable target bench and used that for my remainder of years in that area. The problem with that area as it grew, the range became a dumping grounds for old TV's, washers and dryers, refrigerators, computers etc. to the point of no return. Incidentally I did have a membership in the Tri-State gun club that had trap/skeet pistol and rifle long range, the only problem with that was it turned out to be over a one hour drive. Now here in MO. I've located a fenced range, used mostly by law enforcement and patrolled by the small town Police Dept. to which I got permission to use when unoccupied by LE. Do believe this will be my eternal resting grounds. I do plan on buying 40+ acres of prime hunting area about 30 minutes drive from here as soon as it closes.

My neighbor at our old place had a small range down in the canyon that separated us. He caught a guy down twice in a month there and ran him off each time. Third time was the charm and apparently the cops said he could keep the guys stuff. Not sure cops were fully aware of what neighbor meant by "stuff" that was left behind when the trespasser fled.

I was there from mid 80 until early 2000s; there were idiots that would shoot holes in the roof, shoot the concrete blocks that made up the shooting benches, etc.

But nowadays you have that beautiful Clark County facility

So you can't go shooting out at red rock in the morning then explore "sloth cave" (now gypsum cave) to get out of the afternoon heat anymore?
Nope. The city now spreads almost all the way to the park border now.

When I was a kid a trip to Bonnie Springs Ranch at Red Rocks was an all-dayer. Now it’s close to town.

I’ve only seen the Clark County Shooting Complex on TV, but I’ve heard it’s nice. I wish it was around when I was out there .

Yeah, there were some bad years but that’s changed. The range was shut down for over two years and completely rebuilt. It’s a beautiful facility now with Rangemasters always there—and usually armed. They’ve run off the knot heads that ruin things but they aren’t the type to harangue you about rules. Be safe, be neat and all’s well.

I'll have to check it out when we make another sojourn out West. Used to also shoot shotgun at the city facility; was on the BOD for many years as well.
