What the situation with the Speer shot capsules?
Has Speer discontinued them? or just hasn't had a production run?
The last I bought was 2016 and I've kept looking, even Speer hasn't had them.
Some people indicate they aren't effective. But with small shut, 9 or smaller, they're effective on snakes out to 8-10'. Just remember the further away the target may require an off center aim.

I've shot "at" several snakes with a .44 from only a few feet, IMO they're a waste of time. Without a choke like a TC, they spread out too fast to do much good at killing anything.

And I disagree.. in our pig barn.. the 38/357 will roll a Rat over, but not anchor it.. the 44 spl. is a stop 'em right there proposition. loaded with #9 shot, mostly.. smokes Red Squirrels also.. not that far out tho... that is why God made 20Ga...
Availability?? Like said, put up a notification on Midway... works for me.. or Gun Shows, I always see some, or exactly what you are doing here...except in the Swap, Buy /Sell section..
Good luck.. I have gone to shot shells inside the .44 shell [wad over powder, wad over Shot]..as I need Less Destruction in the Tractor barn on Flying Mice...

I have used the 38/357 capsules; they will kill a snake at distances measured in single digits of feet; the rifling in the barrel creates a spinning doughnut effect and the pattern is thus pretty poor

After an exhaustive search about 4-5 years ago I found a box of 50 .38/357 capsules. Can't find any in stock now but fortunately I have plenty left. I load #8 shot that I pulled from shotgun shells. The load works fine on snakes out to 9-10 feet from a 2" to 4" revolver. As the saying goes, if the snake is close enough to be a danger to you, he is in danger from you with these loads.

I think that they will produce a special run every so often. They are so busy presently that as posted above you have to wait or ask on the various forums you are a member of swap and sell areas stating the caliber you want. I have likewise made some shotshells out of regular brass, a couple grains of Unique or Red Dot, a thin cardboard wad above and below the shot, and shot from an old trap load dud. Made the wads by sharpening the outside of a deprimed brass and using it as a punch. Push the finished wad out with a wire through the flash hole. The heavier the charge the bigger the hole in the doughnut shaped pattern though.

For the 44s, I shorten 444 cases to cylinder length and after fire forming load using 410 plastic wads. Rims sometimes need a little trimming.

You could always make your own. Take a primer case, add some powder then a wad, add a bunch of shot then another wad and either glue it in or crimp.
When I could not find shot capsules (which I now have) I used the same formula that you have except I used gas checks in place of the wads and then lightly crimpted and (stold from spouse) some clear fingernail polish to seal the top gas check against weather. The gas checks can do as much damage as the shot. LOL

Too simple. Harbor Freight cutoff saw. Cut to cylinder length, trim about another .010" in a Forster. Prime, drop in about five grains of Unique, some .45 dia cardboard wads, fill with cornmeal, card on top sealed with water glass and shoot up in the air (outside,). Decap, prime, five to six(I've gone to 7) grains of Unique, .410 one pc wad, fill with #8 1/2 shot after trimming off excess was petals, overshot wad, seal and have fun. Works for .410 for "everlasting" cases. I've done it with 303 British also

I have a Decent supply of 303 Brit converted to .410... works great!!!
Every Situation is a bit different.. snakes?? or any critters outside, is one thing, critters in the barn, is another.. I do Not deliberately shoot holes in the Barn!!!

I was very happy when I got 45acp shot shells made from 308 cases to function semiautomatic in a 1911. (14 lb recoil spring needed to activate slide hold open on last shot.)

I was very unhappy with the pattern, however!

At 5 feet they shred a football sized target. At 10 ft there are mutiple football sized holes in the pattern with no shot.

#9 shot, W231 powder, 3 overpowder wad cards punched out of cardboard/bleach bottle/cardboard with 10mm hole punch, .375 gas checks for overshot.
308 brass cut down, 41 mag sizing die to create headspace shoulder and shot payload area, 357 mag seating die to crimp the mouth. Fingernail polish to seal. Do not anneal brass. Over all length of brass must fit through ejection port after blowing out strait and contacting ejector.

I used to make my own rat shot in .44 Spl using cardboard wads over the powder and plastic wads to crimp over, cut them out myself. I also have some of the Speer capsules left over.

Killed snakes dead as a hammer withing 3 or 4, maybe 5 yards out of my 3" CA Bulldog.

I suggest you do it the old fashioned way and CALL Speer to ask them.
I suggested email because I've found it difficult to contact them by phone but there's nothing wrong with trying. That may have changed since last time I tried. They do supply two toll free phone numbers on their support page I linked to above.

The 3" Bulldog is what I have been using for???? over 30 years... Shot shells and fairly soft lead Boolits!!!
Works well with shot capsules, and also with HomeSpun shot loads...Working on a "new" one currently in fact!!

My 45 ACP shot shells with cut down .410 wads are much tighter than any of the ones I have made using Speer capsules.

That’s despite their smaller payload than say the 45 LC capsules 3rd from the right. Cut the 308 case to length for a 45 ACP revolver chamber like the one 2nd from the right, with .410 wad and it’s about as close to a .410 as your going to get without an old TC hotshot capsule in a single shot pistol with choke.

When I made two diameter brass shotshells like the one next to the .410 shell in the pic, if loaded too much powder they would back out and tie up the cylinder. Maybe a thicker base case than I used would tolerate more pressure.
