A friend found this rifle at his fathers house. Any ideas.

The gun is a Arisaka Type 99 short rifle - 7.7mm Japanese caliber.
Series 33 Toyo Kogyo produced (under the auspices and control of the National Kokura Arsenal) in
1943 or 44.
The Toyo Kogyo factory was located on the outskirts of Hiroshima.

The top of the receiver would originally have had only the national symbol of the Chrysanthemum.
A single, centered gas relief hole with no model markings.

Well, I guess that's one way to make a mannlicher stocked rifle.
Appears the pistol grip has been modified as well. Handguard and rear band missing.
Photos lack some definition and context, but from them it appears someone just cut the barrel off in front of the
front band and put a new front sight on.
From the rust showing in the muzzle, might be best to relegate this one to a wallhanger, unless you really
desire to further shorten the barrel and have a mannlicher carbine.
